A Minister of Music After God's Own Heart

David, the sweet Psalmist, is identified for many of his common characteristics. Many look to David's musical and poetic ability to inspire a nation toward God. Looking to his literature, David's writings are established among the unique books in Psalms motivating encouragement for those that trust in God and seek Him for direction in times of distress. Others hold fast to his charming looks. Modern artists have attempted to capture the essence of this handsome shepherd by building sculptures and moldings of priceless monuments.

Yet though these things focus on David's external qualities, a servant identified an intrinsic strength that could not be counterfeit or attired with a facade. The servant used the words "brave and courageous;" these words are character descriptions. They are not liberal portrayals of one's character distributed upon assumption. Moreover, the observation of David's character was proven and accredited. They represented his testable work.

It is my belief that to be brave means, ‘daring to stand in the face of opposition.’ Martin Luther King Jr. put it this way, "A man who does not stand for something, will fall for anything." To be considered brave, it requires a bold testament of one's willingness to act. It is our actions that people see, it is our actions that people judge, and it is our actions that provoke people's inspiration.

As a Minister of Music, one must be able to stand for one's beliefs. Moreover, it behooves music leaders to stand on the right side of one's convictions which, for Christians, are rooted in the Glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Courage motivates the will to action. Courage is not the action in itself but rather the attitude that is generating the energy to complete the task. In courage, you will find the depths of human conviction. For example, David, while guarding his father's sheep, displayed bravery for taking action against the beast that came to devour his responsibility; however, his actions do not explain why David took action. In courage, one finds David's desire to be counted as a "good shepherd," "good steward," and a "good son." These things David valued. David resolved to protect the sheep and take a stand for his convictions in which he grants worth.

It is essential for a Minister of Music to have the right principals guiding the motives to any action. In the music ministry, people can read right through the wrong motives and smell the fear of one who is not brave. Dare to know what you believe in; e.g., respect, honor, order, brotherly kindness, peace, forgiveness, sexual purity, moral living, Bible study, church attendance; all of these things are supported with Biblical Scripture so your beliefs come with authorization and empowerment from God. So, in a way, we can take our stance by standing on the shoulders of God.

Being over any body of people, it is wise to be aware that conflict will be on the horizon at any time. Sometimes you can see it coming, other times it will reveal itself at times of unwanted and unforeseen circumstances.

Regardless of how it avails itself, we must be willing to stand for God, and with our brothers and sisters in Christ to resolve issues of any kind.

So how do you deal with conflict? Doctors have resolved the human response will be one of two reactions: "fight" or "flight." The "fight or flight response" is our body's primitive, automatic and inborn response that prepares the body to "fight" or "flee" from perceived attack, harm or threat. Fight or flight occurs when we experience excessive stress, internal worry or external circumstance. The word "conflict" will circumference these terms and issues as we proceed to address managing the music ministries.

Leadership is not always easy. It means that you are more than a mere church musician. At times, you become the mediator, mentor and model for others under your leadership.

When there is conflict, there is stress. Therefore, when we have a conflict in the music ministry of the church we must address two important areas of any given situation; "ourselves" and the area of "conflict." Musicians must understand how to deal with conflict.

First, comprehend that worry will never aid conflict resolution. Worry is best described as a person rocking in a rocking-chair; it gives you something to do but it doesn't get you anywhere. Worry does not fix conflict! Worry troubles you! Worry is defined as, “tormenting oneself with, or suffers from, disturbing thoughts of fret; to distress one’s self with cares, anxieties or troubles.” No one makes us worry, that is something we have control over. Conflict opens a window for leaders to worry, which creates stress.

Stress is not necessarily good for leadership. The effects of stress are: chronic headache, anxiety disorder, mood swings, substance abuse, weight loss or weight gain, memory disturbance and sleeplessness.

The Believer needs to understand that this is not the state of mind that that God has purposed for His people. God's will for the Christians and the ministries that they operate is to be at peace in mind and at heart.

Philippians 4:7: "And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and mind through Christ Jesus."

First things First, Don’t worry about anything! Philippians 4:6 declares, "Don't worry about anything, but pray about everything." As music leaders, we must be willing to receive orders from the "Chief Musician" who orchestrates the masterful compositions on the canvases of lives and ministries.

Pray! If the music ministry is to be effective in the church, then prayer is essential. Pray privately for those who are following your leadership, and for guidance for the direction of the ministry, pray publicly for the purpose of those who work as a collective body which we call the music ministry. From prayer, the music leader and ministry gains a deeper understanding of their purpose, power and promise.

Second, David didn't run from the bears, lions and beasts that challenged his stewardship. Neither are music leaders to flee their post for overseeing the member of the music ministries that are under his or her guard.

Address conflict! Operate in a spirit of meekness and be motivated in a spirit of brotherhood. Music is an essential part of today's viable church and it must be safeguarded with all diligence, for the Glory of God. Music leaders will be tried and tested by members of their ministry. Leaders will not always know when, how or where "ministry conflict" will occur. There are three important dynamics to remember when battling conflict in ministry:

1) Words
2) Weaponry
3) and War Ground.

Words

The words of a good leader will be grounded upon Godly principals, spoken with gentleness projected with brotherly kindness. Speaking the truth in love is a requirement of effective communication. The certainty that one's words fulfill these requirements are not difficult, but perhaps challenging, however, definitely performable.

Ask yourself these two questions when responding or initiating a possible conflict situation.

  1. Is what I'm saying true?

Maintaining this essential requirement safeguards the ministry leaders from using "he said, she said," "I think or feel" or making decisions based on oneself or personal objective outside of the Will of God. Speaking the truth gives credibility to the leader to decipher the truth and act on good information.

  1. Is what I am saying being motivated by and spoken in love?

Words spoken without the crucial ingredient of love, has resulted in music ministries left shattered, in shambles. It has caused vacancies among the once occupied pews of the congregation, and it has brought shame to function the body of Christ. But God is Love. To all saved music leaders, this comes as a reassurance that you have been equipped with the necessary tools to get the job done.

Weaponry

In Ephesians we are instructed to use the "Sword of the Spirit" which is the "Word of God." We must be skilled at "spiritual fencing;" mastering the art of using The Bible to confront and resolve "ministry conflict." Music leaders must become equipped by accumulating scriptures and spiritual truths. The Bible speaks of hiding these words in our hearts so that when they are needed they will be available upon remembrance.

War Ground

Choosing the right battle ground is crucial to any victory. Choir rehearsals or music council meeting are not always the best places to handle conflict. There are times when music leaders can resolve major issues with personal connections. Utilizing "one-on-one" conversations or small meetings of two or three can aid in accomplishing effective communication.
