The Journey of a Rock

I am one of millions of tiny grains in one big sedimentary rock, insignificant and unnoticed but I was not always like this I was once my own rock standing up proudly on the top of the mountain, my journey to being what I am now was long. It started with a tiny crack in me that if it wasn’t for freeze-thaw weathering would not be of much importance. But it rained all day until the night came by. By that time the crack was full of water and that night was very cold so the water froze. When it froze it expanded slightly, opening the crack wider. Day after day this kept on happening until, PLOP! I fell into the river below. I had no time to think about anything as I was instantly dragged down the river surrounded by many other similar rocks. The river tugged and pulled forcing me into other rocks and little parts fell off me, slowly eroding me. As the river started to slow down I notice the bigger rocks being deposited. The slower the river got the more rock were being deposited. By that time I was quite small so it was only when I neared the mouth of the river that I was deposited. I fell down, the river could no longer carry my weight.

I was on the river bed and I though nothing would ever happen to me again but I was wrong. More and more rocks were deposited on top of me and I felt like I was going to burst, but I didn’t. Instead as more rock fell on top of me all the rocks were compressed more and more and eventually we formed one big sedimentary rock. This is an incredible story about how I came from being a rock on the top of the mountain to being part of a bigger sedimentary rock, a journey that many rocks have made.

It may seem like the end but in fact it was not. I still had long way to travel until I settle, that may even be never. What happened next happened over a long period of time. Slowly, very slowly more rock piled up on top of me forcing me closer and closer to the earth’s crust. Consequently it also got much hotter. As the heat rose I could feel that I was, yet again, changing. This time not from a big rock to a small fragment of a sedimentary rock but I was changing from sedimentary to metamorphic. My sides became smother and I interlocked with the other grains, forming I tighter hold, making the rock stronger.

Even this was not the end, I was still forces further downwards and it got even hotter than before. So hot that I melted and join many other rocks in a pool of boiling magma in a chamber underground and there I wished to stay.  But as you probably know by now my journey does not end so easily nor so quickly. Pressure from below the earth’s crust forced me up through a hole in the mountain and up I went, spat out from this volcano as lava. The eruption was like nothing I have ever experience before. I was lost in a cloud of ash, small jets of lava sprayed out around me. I thought that this truly must be the end for me, and a tragic on it would be. But no I survived these extreme conditions and landed on the side of the volcano and slowly cooled, forming and igneous rock with large crystals.

To me it seemed like it must be the end but I was wrong again. I was weathered again and again carried down the mountain , not by river this time, but wind and deposited at the bottom where  I was compressed and became a sedimentary rock once more, ready to start the cycle all over again…
