HE'LL NEVER KNOW

The pain of unrequited love.

He’ll never know, when he says hello,

how the warmth and tenderness of his smile

flows through the empty chambers of my heart.

Like a narcotic drug through the veins of its victim,

it lifts me to euphoric heights, then wears away,

leaving my soul longing for more.

He’ll never know, when he leans across

and whispers a friendly secret,

that the soft caress of his breath against my skin,

like an over indulgence of sweet tasting wine,

makes my head spin wildly

and the rampant pounding of my heart

leaves me weak and trembling.

He’ll never know, when he laughs

and reaches out to touch my arm,

that his hand ignites a flame, buried deep for so long,

that I am forced to make a feeble excuse

and flee the room in panic at the very reality of it’s being.

He’ll never know, that I close my eyes

to find the secret place in the darkened

safety of my mind where he is mine.

Where he comes to me, smiling through gentle eyes

and touches my cheek with the back of his hand,

tenderly brushing his thumb across my lips

and whispers, “I love you.”

He’ll never know, when I open them again,

that the stark, cold light of reality forces me to see the truth,

and I weep with the knowledge

that he’ll never know.

Wonderful and hard to ignore imagery cascading through the details. I love how the outward perception is kept simple, because in life we don't know the vivid, lucid reality of what is in the mind of the beholder. The inward perception was the very manifestation of my understanding of the word "contrast". Honest! Brilliant! Bravo!

So much emotion so well expressed in this. A love yearning to be recognized but kept silent for fear of losing what one's got. Clear and heart-breaking!
