As I walk across the hot pavement of rubble,

Eyes stinging from the ash-filled air,

I stand back to see the full view

And watch as these great men

Struggle against despair,

Fingers worked to the bone,

Backs bent in pain.

Even as my tears pour down like rain,

They still cannot put out these ever-burning flames.

But as my eyes clear and the dust settles

Just a little,

My aching heart is lifted.

As I see the love and dedication

Of all these people that have come together

To save this desecrated land.

You can see the flag still stands,

As does the spirit of every American.
