The human race has two belief systems. One honors God and the other dishonors God. The Christian needs to learn to distinguish these two systems and then learn to function from the one that honors God.

TWO BELIEF SYSTEMS:  OLD-MAN AND NEW-MAN BELIEF SYSTEMS

Introduction

I do not have to be right.  I am in search of truth.  I do not find it difficult to completely change what I believe, alter what I believe, or tweak what I believe if I become convinced that a change, alteration, or tweaking is necessary to draw me into or closer to the truth as revealed to us by God, our heavenly Father, through His inspired, inerrant, infallible Word (the original manuscripts).

I have taken the terminology found in the title of this document from the teaching of my beloved pastor friends, Rev. Ron Adema and Rev. Al Rosenblum.  I could have used my terms, “Old-Man Thinking and New-Man Thinking,” instead of “Old-Man Belief System and New-Man Belief System,” but the latter terms were fresh on my mind as a result of a wonderful SKYPE conversation with Al Rosenblum a few evenings ago.  I like the terms “Old-Man and New-Man BELIF SYSTEMS, but “old-man thinking and new-man thinking” has been so much a part of my vocabulary for years that without thinking – there they are.  I view “Old-Man and New-Man Belief Systems” and “Old-Man and New-Man Thinking” synonymously.

This document is written as a challenge to any form of teaching that refuses to acknowledge that the goal of the Christian life is to become exactly like Jesus Christ in His humanity, and that to do so, victory over the world and the flesh – both reachable goals – must be achieved.

Christianity, for the most part, has been reduced to a religion – ritual without reality.  Approximately 90% plus of all Christianity preaches and teaches a false method of salvation, and less that 2% of all Christians today have an correct understanding of what constitutes spirituality in the Church Age.  If you don’t think that this is serious, just take a look at the mess the world is in today, and ask yourself if there is any connection between the mess that we’re in and our lack of understanding of what Christianity is really all about?

In view of these introductory thoughts, I offer the following information.

Two Systems of Thinking

 1. There is an old-man belief system / old-man thinking.

 2. There is a new-man belief system / new-man thinking.

Regarding these two systems of thinking, I believe the following:

 1.  Every human being has an old-sin-nature, an old-man system of thinking, and old-man function.

 2.  Old-man function is the application of old-man thinking to the circumstances of life while yielded to the old-sin-nature.

 3.  Every born-again Christian has a new nature, the availability of a new-man system of thinking, and the availability of new-man function.

 4.  New-man function is the application of new-man thinking to the circumstances of life while yielded to the indwelling Holy Spirit.

 5.  The old-sin-nature and the old-man are not synonymous.

 6.  The old-sin-nature and the old-man are two sides of the same coin.  You can’t have one without the other.

 7.  The old-sin-nature provides the power that produces old-man function from the source of old-man thinking.

 8.  The Holy Spirit provides the power that produces new-man function from the source of new-man thinking.

The following information is not meant as disagreement, nor is it meant to be confrontational – it’s simply a matter of my understanding.

My View of Things the Way I Believe Them to Be

Many “religious” denominations, “religious” organizations, etc., --- are works oriented for salvation.  Their works are a product of yieldedness to the old-sin nature and the application of old-man thinking that produces old-man function.  These denominations and organizations call for “obedience,” but it remains that obedience when produced their way is always from the source of their old-man because they never teach their constituents “how-to” access their new-man for obedience to be accomplished from the source of their new-man.  Anything accomplished from the source of the old-man is repugnant to God, no matter how well-meaning is the one who is producing the “obedience.”  These people are doing what I call the WHAT without the HOW-TO.

I know that I sound like a broken record, but I am confident that I will go to my grave believing the following – unless convinced otherwise:  If a human being does not learn “the mechanics” (the “how-to”) of accessing his new-man for new-man function, either the great white throne or the bema seat experience will not be a pretty picture for that individual.

I respectfully ask this question:  In your understanding of “two belief systems,” or “old-man / new-man thinking,” where, when, and how do you incorporate Romans 6:6, 6:11, and 6:13 - know, reckon, reckon, yield, and then “do-the-truth” – into your teaching?  (Part of the opposition I receive regarding this subject is the ludicrous, foolish, and dangerously distracting argument that my us of the “Know, Reckon, Reckon, and Yield” terminology comes from the King James Version, and that if I used another translation the terminology would be different.  Well, HELLO!! That’s really deep, isn’t it?

In my understanding, “doing-the-truth” is tantamount to doing what the new-man belief system or what new-man thinking requires.  If a person fails to “do the truth,” whatever he does is tantamount to an application of his old-man belief system or his old-man thinking.  (For the remainder of this document, “old-man thinking / new-man thinking ” is implied with every use of “old-man/new-man belief systems.”)

If a person acknowledges the existence of both an old-man belief system and a new-man belief system, I can lead that person to understand what the content of his new-man belief system should be, but until he is taught and learns “how-to” access his new-man to enable him to apply his new-man belief system, he will struggle to apply because his application will come from the source of his old-man – and he will live in the constant defeat of Romans 7 living.

Any victory achieved by old-man function in the Church Age is spiritually worthless because it is achieved in the energy of the flesh.  For example, can an alcoholic claim spiritual victory by overcoming his alcoholism through function in a twelve-step-program?  I think not.  The benefit of his victory may be temporal in nature, but it has no eternal value.

On a personal note, I have previously noted that I do not have to be right, but if I am wrong, I want someone to help my understanding.  Until now, what I hear from others is WHAT they believe Christians ought to be doing – minus any discussion, reference to, inference or anything else related to Romans 6:6, 6:11, and 6:13 – and what others may believe that Christians should be doing falls short of explaining why my understanding may be incorrect – and if I am, someone needs to be compassionate enough toward me to explain the error of my thinking to give me an opportunity to get it right before the Lord calls me home.  A person telling me WHAT they believe a Christian should be doing does not necessarily explain what the error may be in my personal thinking if what that person believes does not deal directly with the error in my thinking.  To tell me WHAT I ought to be doing begs-the-question.  I already know WHAT I ought to be doing.  I’m waiting for someone to tell me HOW to do WHAT I am being told I need to do.  It’s the HOW that’s missing, not the WHAT.

The focus of old-man belief system is “what,” not the “how.”  The focus of new-man belief system is “what,” the not “how.”  I believe that a spiritually disastrous switch is taking place today in teaching, preaching, counseling, and witnessing, wherein the “what” is being taught as the “how.”  It is subtle, but none-the-less disastrous.  Here’s how it occurs.  If I say to someone, “I have a problem (and I explain the nature of my problem).”  And then I ask, “HOW do I get victory over this problem?”  I have used the word “how,” but my counselor interprets my request as “what” do I do to get victory over my problem, and gives me the “what” – pray, give, go, stop, start, etc.  The one seeking help has asked for the “how” to become victorious, but received the “what,” believing the “what” to be the “how.”  He then goes on to more failure because the “what-without-the-how” is failure waiting to occur.  The real “how-to” is Romans 6:6, 6:11, 6:13 (know, reckon, reckon, yield) – and then do-the-truth.  The “truth” is the specific “what” found in his new-man belief system (for example:  pray, give, go, stop, start, etc.).

If Romans 6:6, 6:11, and 6:13 do not function in making the transition in application from the old-man belief system to the new-man belief system, the end result is a futile attempt to transform the old-man by the old-man trying to put on new-man thinking.  Old-man function is default function when an application of Romans 6:6, 6:11, and 6:13 is by-passed, with or without cognizance.

Just a few more thoughts:

Romans 6:6 knowing [p.a.pt. ginwskw] this, that our old man WAS crucified [3ps.a.p.i. sustaurow] with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. NKJV

 1. You cannot apply what you do not know.

 2.  If you do not know that your old-man WAS crucified with Christ, you default to old-man function.

 3.  Default old-man function results in continual defeat against the world and the flesh.

Colossians 3:8 But now you yourselves are to put off [2p.a.p.m.imp. apotiqhmi] all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off [nom. pl. a.m.pt. apekduomai] the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on [nom. pl. a.m.pt. enduw] the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, NKJV

 1.  The following represent old-man function:  anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth, lying to one another.

 2.  The following represent pseudo-solutions/reactions to the circumstances of life based upon old-man belief system:  anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth, lying to one another.

 3.  “since you have put off [nom. pl. a.m.pt. apekduomai] the old man” indicates that the old-man has already been put-off.  This was appropriated at the moment of salvation due to the old-man’s “retroactive positional death” on the cross with Christ.

 4.  The judicial death of the “old-man” is the basis for the Christian to now experientially put-off all of the following:  “anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth, lying to one another.

 5.  “since you have put off [nom. pl. a.m.pt. apekduomai] the old man with his deeds” – “with his deeds” does not imply that they have already become experientially victorious over the sins mentioned in this verse, but rather that these sins have the old-man as their source.

 6.  The new-man is put on at the moment of salvation, but is devoid of any new-man thinking (new-man belief system) until pertinent doctrine is learned.

 7.  The fact that the new-man has been put on in this verse is simply an indication that they are saved. Now, their new man needs to be “renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.”

/

 8.  This verse tells the Christian WHAT-TO-DO, with no hint of HOW-TO do what they are told to do.  The HOW-TO is found in Romans 6:6, 6:11, 6:13.

Ephesians 4:22 that you put off [a.m.inf. apotiqhmi], concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, NKJV

 1.  If the old-man is “put-off” by “reckoning him dead to sin” the “former conduct” is judicially put-off” with him.

 2.  You kill the fruit by dealing with the root.

Ephesians 4:24 and that you put on [a.m.inf. enduw] the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. NKJV

 1.  “put on the new-man,” here, implies new-man function.

 2.  You already have him.  Now, clothe him with the true righteousness and holiness that is found in the truth of your new-man belief system.
