You read about it in the newspapers almost every day. The television news programs report on its activities. There have been documentaries and specials made on the subject. Many lives have been destroyed by it. It is not a respecter of persons has no boundary lines, no prejudges, it strikes down men, women and children alike. It has been going on since the beginning of time.
TERRORISM! A word that strikes fear in the hearts of the bravest of men. A cancer on civilized society everywhere! It appears to be growing at a rapid rate. When I decided to write this book, I did extensive research on the subject matter. I watched countless television programs on the subject and read numerous documented articles for over two years.
Even after exhaustive research I began to realize that after a while I was trying to find a reason for the existence of terrorism and why any normal, rational person would commit such heinous destruction. What I did find filled me with loathing and horror. It sickened me! Dating back to the early 1900’s, from the time of the Boxer Rebellion, until the present time, there have been over two hundred reported cases of terrorist attacks all over the world, involving various nationalities.
This number doesn’t include all the cases chalked up to ‘causes unknown’, yet suspected to be the work of terrorists, but, because of the lack of evidence, nothing can be proven. I originally thought that this type of thing could never happen on American soil that it occurred only on foreign ground. Then the Oklahoma City bombing and the Atlanta Olympic games bombings happened and my perspective drastically changed. My research revealed that these incidents were by far not the only ones in America, there have been numerous other cases.
It struck me that no one is safe. No one is immune from the specter of terrorism! The causes of terrorism take on primarily three forms, that being Religion, Politics and Racism, though not necessarily in those orders. I thought the terrorists were made up of some fanatical, crazy groups, but this is not the case, at least for the most part. Yes, there are crazed lunatics out there, but, the majority of terrorists are intelligent, cunning people, people who look just like you and me. They could pass for our neighbors. Look at Timothy McVeigh.
Because of these facts, they are all the more dangerous. Terrorism is not racial, in as much as it is not confined to any certain race. There is no one group or person that has a monopoly on it. Terrorists come in many different colors, races and nationalities. The terrorist could be anyone in the world. Another thing that I discovered was that many nations actually welcome the terrorist within their borders and gives them ‘Diplomatic Immunity’.
Our law enforcement agencies are unable to curb the destruction because they are bound by the laws enacted to prevent the ‘law of the jungle’ from prevailing in our society. Law enforcement agencies are also understaffed, under budgeted and do not have the resources to combat terrorism.
After all the research and after the time spent actually writing the book, finally S*T*A*R, The Surveillance of Terrorist Activity and Retaliation, was born. Although this is a work of fiction, it incorporates numerous accounts recorded throughout history as examples. I feel it reflects the attitudes of millions of people all over the world in their frustration in being unable to do anything about such a destructive force in our world.
The characters and events in this manuscript are purely fictional and a result of the authors imagination. It is my sincerest wish that the reader will enjoy this book as much as I have writing it.
