The once flawless facade is now mottled and cracked

Battered by decades that will never come back

The thatch on the roof is beginning to fade

By storms threatened and weathered, its colour now drained

**********

The windows no longer are as bright as they have been

But vivid lights from within can still clearly be seen

While a welcoming fire in the hearth still burns

A seat at the fireside now has to be earned

**********

Many that have entered brought with them good times

Others that came here, thankfully, moved on with their lives

Lovers forever have settled within

But then become strangers when real life begins

**********

This house has cradled children and sheltered their souls

Protected and defended and enabled their goals

But houses grow old, while the young ones just grow

And then they move on to a structure their own

**********

This house is not home to any kind of hate

The rules of admission say you leave it at the gate

And the path to this house over time has stretched out

To more than an arm’s length should there be any doubt

**********

This house has known things that should never have been

Death and destruction and all things between

But this house still stands for all things that are good

The foundations unshaken despite all they’ve withstood

**********

This house has played host to myriad dreams

Some tempered with sense, some mad to extremes

But when this house fails and I prove just like the rest

Perhaps some will remember this house at its best
