What kind of love is this, so subdued and humble?
Civil and very shy, no wandering hands or hot kisses
I kiss you like lovers do, even wanting more
bravely you kiss me back, looking very unhappy
your hands hold me awkwardly
I start to feel like I'm a shadow, or a redhot iron rod
don't burn your fingers on me, I think, don't burn your lips

All of this feels like siblings bonding, not lovers' passions
in an experiment I test you and deem you out
not out of my life, but out of my love, once and for all
some weeks later I meet you and a handsome youth
holding hands is such a give-away, I smile and so do you
looking happy and content you are where you want to be
being what you are, not what you pretended to be
