ACT 1

A group of language students are seated outside the lecture halls waiting for their Italian teacher to arrive. One of  their colleagues  arrives looking  cheerful.

Patricia:

Hi everyone ! I see I’m the last to arrive today?

Marco:

No ,you are not the last! Rosa isn’t here yet

Serena:

But among the students you are the last

Patricia:

Oh well I’m glad I came inbefore Rosa. At least I can speak some English before the Italian starts!

Melanie:

Well, her  insisting we speak Italian is for our own good, afterall that’s why we are here

Patricia:

I know but I just think the Italian language is too difficult to use in expressing myself

Alex:

Oh well, practice makes perfect

Patricia  sits down next to Halima

Patricia:

Hey Halima why are you not speaking to your friend Diego?

Halima:

I don’t know what is wrong with him , he has been acting strange for a while now.

Serena:

Maybe he has some personal problems that  he is dealing with.

Halima :

Yes, maybe .you know some men have the habit of keeping their feeling inside but I think…

The church bell rings gong!! Gong!!! Gong!!!!

Diego:

Oh! How I hate this church bells, they break into your very thoughts

Alex:

Yeah the bells just  destroyed my fantasy of living as a king

Serena:

I have a church near my house at guizza.the bell is horrible.it always wakes me up from my siesta

Marco:

I actually like the bell.it creates an ancient motif and aura and sometimes the chimes sound like a hymn I’ve heard before.

Melanie:

I also like the church bells, for me it reminds me to be good even if I don’t go to church

Alex:

I wish it wasn’t so loud.thats all.

Diego:

What annoys me is the irrelevance of  the whole thing. i think it was meant to tell time but now we have watches and clocks and even phones that tell the time

Serena:

The Italian government once considered stopping the ringing of church bells...

Patricia:

But that’s impossible. Its part of the Italian history and culture and the church bell is now more than a religious sound and rutual.

Marco:

That’s true it is part of the culture in Italy and I don’t think the Italians themselves consider  it a nuisance.

Halima:

I agree with you Marco, one of the national monuments of Italy is a bell tower that is leaning to the side. It is called the leaning tower of Pisa.the story goes that  while its construction was going on, the architect found out that the foundation of the tower was askew hence the tower will not stand straight. upon the discovery, the architect ran away out of shame.

Diego:

So what happened next?

Halima:

Well, the Italians didn’t give up on the tower and went on to finish it in its leaning position

Serena:

Oh yes!  I have heard of the leaning tower in tuscany!

Alex:

true! it’s a world famous tower although its bell never rings

Patricia:

Wow! That’s so wonderful, just when people think the situation is hopeless that is  when things turn around for good.

Marco:

How do you mean?

Patricia :

Well, the tower must have  felt different in that it wasn’t straight like other towers  and that its construction took decades and even after construction its bell did not work!

General chuckles and Laughter

Patricia :

The tower still endured and now it’s the most famous tower in Italy and people come from all over the world to see it

Diego:

Great story! Silence really speaks louder than words! Can all the bells stop ringing too so they can be famous?!

General laughter

Alex:

Hey guys Rosa is here!

Rosa:

Hi everyone!

All :

hi Rosa!!!

Rosa:

Okay guys lets go inside for the lesson . Alex , how are you today?

Alex:

i’m fine thank you and you...?

All exit

The end
