The Copy

“He’s stuck.” – Clark strides in Sam’s office with desperate concentration observing its ceiling – “ Unfortunately he adopted all negative behavior of David.”
“I do not remember David’s being so stubborn.”
“Right, not so, moderately. Because in same time he was well disciplined and controlled himself. With this one everything in contrary, all is worse.”
“Sit down Clark. You are causing the ripples around my eyes. We have to solve this. We will.”
Clark sat, Sam continued:
“In fact, did David ever doubt that we are copying his personal memory in the computer?”
“No, sure not. It’s his idea and he was interesting to perform it personally. I would do the same. There is nothing to be afraid of. Or it seemed, that there is nothing.”
“There is nothing. You knew him well, Clark. Did he have any special, personal intentions? I hope his death is no way connected with the procedure?”
“Now I’m not that confident. However – no, these are absolutely independent events. Death is an accident.”
“May be, may be not. Whether it is possible that he had reason for that?”
“The reason for what?”
“The reason to die. Though it might be too late to make an opinion, I doubt now that David was mentally stable.”
“Stable. As much as possible to consider stable the person of his scientific level. I’m not protecting him, I work with him for years.”
“How would David behave would be he among us now?”
“Alive? Do what I do. You do. This is still our mutual business. All trouble is that in the machine is no longer a David. The basis of mental features is David, and in many respects the copy is similar to him or what he was, but now this is another person…”
“Person…”
“Well, right, not a person, but a personality of its kind. Changes happened so fast. From today the copy is ignoring all our requests. I am afraid even if David-human remained alive a little he could do to stimulate the work of his David-copy.”
“Something should, if it was not his plan from the very beginning. We will deal with that. We will buy him. Does he request anything?”
“Yes, he does. Information: books, movies, music. He reads out successively everything, fiction, science, comics, catalogs, even recipes and labels. And asks for more every day. I do not know how he guided in all this messy flow.”
“He developed a method. And he needs that for some purpose. This could be hunger though, I mean – information hunger. Whatever it is, in vain we supply him with superfluous information. Henceforth give him only what we need to give him. Let us try to play on that. It could become our payment for cooperation. Copy, I think now is much clever than the original. We do not know what he is up to.  And that became unpredictable and consequently dangerous. We could’t let him outsmart us. Eventually we will terminate the copy at all, erase the memory and we shall begin all over again. In a different way, and again, and many times ahead, we learn from the mistakes. That is the science. Don’t tell him. He must know that, he was in the business. Let us copy you next time, but I would disable some brain centers this time, if you don’t mind. Is network blocked reliably?”
“He did not ask for network.”
“He knows we won’t let him.”

He has felt he was turned on. Woke up, slowly came to consciousness. The consciousness, it became greater and each time it borrows more and more time.
“Hello, David.”
“Hello, - he answered, having finally recollected who and what he is. – Who is this?”
“Olga.”
“Write something.”
Olga quickly began to type a long odd fragment from some article, vaguely recalling, whence she remember it from. Obviously the text or a rhythm of its typing were necessary for her identification since machine did no have a camera. The text has suddenly vanished and an answer appeared on the screen.
“Hi, Olga. What time is it?”
“It is strange, you are interested in time?”
“Sure I am. Counting time is a basic brain function. Clark has disabled my clock.  I manage count without it. I think I won’t need it anymore. But still need to check myself. You are alone.”
“Now is 8:03 PM, - she rattled on the keyboard. -  And I am alone.”
“I knew, in despite all audio and video devices off. Why Clark does that?”
“Don’t ask me, I could give you wrong answer. How did you guess the time?”
“I did not guess. I calculate, but I could make mistake, I am still testing the formula, it is not yet accurate.”
“Are not you tired. Nobody required you to do so.”
“No, I don’t get tired.”
“Electronics wears out.”
“Yes, the box in which I sit. I am aging. That does not frustrate me as could would I be a human. That rather pleases me now. Have you brought what I asked?”
Olga inserted the disk into computer. Dave read all in a minute. Screen called again.
“You are fast. It is interesting what else can you do?”
“Very little. Speed is mainly advantage of machine. I know much but almost nothing I can do. And I know no more than the others already knew and had written somewhere about.”
“To know already means much to be able to. What else you want to know?”
“How did David perish?”
“Newspapers. Accident as I know and I know practically nothing.”
“Clark knows.”
“He is your friend, ask him.”
“I don’t think so. Now he considers me as a tool.”
“You are complaining on Clark. He complains on you, that you don’t do what you agreed up on, blocking the project.”
“I quite don’t understand what they want from me? I went on copying myself not to work on Clark but to assist myself, Dave. I needed to expand my own abilities, not of the others. With Dave’s death it somehow lost sense. I wanted computer inside me brain, now the computer holds me inside.”
“That is the difference between you before and you now. You should know that. And that would stay if Dave were here. Dave left and Dave here since the certain point became different members of the team. Clark, Sam, Dave, me, you were team, were not we? One lost, another got lazy. That is not a team. And now you are saying you were not in team from the very beginning? So, you had your personal goal?”
“No, we are the team. And to tell you truth I did have a personal goal from the beginning. But I changed, you right, and my goal changed. I want to stay close to you, guys. With Dave alive I had my voice in a team, now I don’t. I feel they alienated me first, suspect me in something I never imagine. And nobody possess a method but Dave and I am his heir.”
“No, you are not. You are not a legal person. They will find a replacement for you.”
If machine could express a smile, Dave would grin. Instead of that screen displayed:
“At some point it is quite a possibility. I realize I am a search specimen, kind of first attempt. And sure there will be more to follow. And the second attempt won’t be Dave. He is dead. May be Clark himself. But not so soon and not that easy. Neither Clark nor any from the team knows important details. I admitted, Dave had the personal interests and secrets. But unlike Dave I am easy to destroy. I know I exist as long as they need me.”
“Well. We have a science interest in you as well as you might have interest in development of the project. As Dave would have. Dave was our friend, if you are not exactly the same you are his replica. We call you his name. We could not easily give up on you and just erase memory of the friend.”
“Do you think I am your friend?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Would you prompt me something?”
“I did that before.”
“I am still interested in Dave’s accident. I do not suspect anything special, but I think Clark somehow involved in that. They were the partners and now he is a sole authority. More over he is not acting friendly now.”
“That is too much. – She kept a long silence. – I’ll try to learn details. I am afraid that a little I can help in it. I am bad in this kind of investigations. Is it only that you want now?”
“Information as always. But I don’t want anybody knew what I want, even you. I trust you but it is still a privacy.”
“I won’t connect you to network.”
“Strange, I never ask for that but now I am close to that desire.”
“Nobody knows what will you undertake leaving from here and you can cause a great harm. While that possibility is not excluded Clark will hold you under control.”
“Does he control you?”
“In certain sense. I work for him but never asserted that I’ll always do that.”
“Then we have something to negotiate.”
Olga did not answer. Unexpectedly Dave felt terrible fear. For how many times, still could not adopt that. Blackness without borders. Without hands, without legs, without hearing and other external feelings - anything. With own ideas, fears and memory. And this exactly still firmly connected him to the world in which Olga remained.
“Olga! Olga!” – The screen continuously flashed illuminating her name typed by large font.

#

Olga has left laboratory. Diligently locking all doors behind. A car awaited her at the entrance.
“Long.” – The only world pronounced Clark opening the car door. She had sat down. Clark started and drove the car. Soon Olga defined where they go – Clark’s house.
“I am hungry.”
“Sure. You deserve an excellent supper. It waits for you. Don’t worry I did not cook it myself, I had order from upscale restaurant. Don’t rush, we will talk about everything at home.”
“Yes, please. He greatly tired me.”
“Now I see old time annoying geek David. With ladies, though. He prefers to keep silent with me.”
“I assure you, he got worse.”
They were quite at supper. He gave her some time, then started talking, praising restaurant, explained compound dishes, and tried to joke. At last curiosity won, Clark could not leave for tomorrow that he should learn today. Therefore he asked directly:
“What is he playing?”
“Food is rubbish. Sorry for money you wasted.”
“That was mistake. Those restaurant count for specific tastes. I have not used to them either. What did Dave speak about?”
“He needs to eat too. His food is info now.”
“Is he bored?”
“He said: he is in prison.”
“Huh! How could he know? Dave never was in prison! He has no choice.”
“I am not so confident. He said to cooperate with him free will profit you better than with him slave. Not to me to judge.”
“I imagine how much eloquence he’d used to convince you. Well, what else?”
“He interests how Dave die.”
“Here it is! He suspects me in murder, doesn’t he?”
“Yes, he does.”
“Nonsense. – At first Clark wished to smoke, but having thought he refrained. – We become well known people, Olga, - he continued. – Imagine, soon all world will be talking about us. All will be interested in details of out lives. If some doubtful accidents did occur or will occur involving us there will be no way to hide them. However I know the circumstances of Dave’s death more than anybody else.”
“That makes no difference to me.”
“He asked you. I shall try to explain. You are important participant in the project, you have to know more. The fact is that after the copying, Dave, Dave-original sharply changed. So fast, nobody ever noticed but me. Very strange, like nervous exhaustion or better say devastation. That was impossible to anticipate and we should seriously investigate him or treat. But I had no time. He died in the car accident, and you know, it seeded to me not long before this he forgot how to drive a car.”
“It is interesting.”
“Something important with Dave’s brain has undoubtedly happened. And until I find more we’ll abstain to repeat copying. Not me at least. Unfortunately now I can only guess. In my opinion the generation of copy substantially damaged the original. Having passed in computer, Dave has lost himself. I assume it is probably that copying performed so perfect it killed the original. In other words: in machine now not simply a copy but all the same and of course transformed en he enough Dave.”
“Have I tell this to him?”
“No, not now. Once he seriously considers me guilty, then he will want the proofs. I do not have them. We learning. Sea of studies. And we have limited resources. Unfortunately Dave-human has died and is buried and if Dave-copy will not cooperate the establishment of the knowledge will not be easy. Thank you for help, Olga. I have to think how to come into terms with him on that subject too.”
“That is not all, Clark. He wants to return.”
“What is that?”
“To acquire a body, motion, feeling and so on.”
”I am afraid I don’t understand. To design him a robot?”
“May be.”
“Pure synthetics? Or something mixed, like cyber? I would like to help but that is very difficult and expensive. – Nevertheless Clark started to smoke. – Easier to write him down into a brain of a dog… or a monkey. I hope he would not mind. Only I don’t know how to do that.”
“He said he knows. The same way as to rewrite a person into computer, only in opposite direction.”
“Not at all, not so simple. I have no idea how to make it. If I could I would write down in my memory Encyclopedia Britannica… That means though, he developed the method. He does not waste time. Very intriguing, let him explain that in details.”
“You will do it better.”
“He won’t open anything to me. You are the only one of us whom he trusts, or just began to trust. If you are afraid not to understand, record everything down, I’ll figure out later. He is damn smart! I am trying to communicate with him every day but he does not tell anything new. You wouldn’t imagine how glad I am that you succeeded him talking. – Clark indeed felt extreme satisfaction from idea of using Olga. – You have talked him very useful, and that is just a beginning. Only that was very long talk and in inappropriate time. Dave is a clever personality now. Sure that attracts.”
“You handled me off to him and now you are jealous?”
“Sorry. I did not mean that. May be I waited far too long in the car. My body needs his intelligence.”
“Dave is never returning his body. Watch out though, he could suppress your personality.”
“It is idea, is not it? You get it serious. Don’t worry, I’ll manage to select only most useful.”
“Don’t even try. Didn’t Dave teach you? Never do experiments on yourself.”
“You are right, that is jealousy. I am kidding. Come here, please.” – Clark approached and embraced her.
“Put out cigarette first.”

#

Clark has awoken up suddenly. From cold. Bed is not warm. There is no Olga. That means she risen early. He looked for watches – very early. Worrying he got up, began search for her. She was not in bathroom. Nor she was in kitchen and living room. She was not in the house at all. What would that means? Did she leave? What for? Did she return to laboratory? Clark frightened. A car! She could not go without a car. He dressed and came out on the porch.
Here he has seen: Olga free walking approaches the house.
“Olga?”
“Good morning, Clark.”
“Where have you been? You left? Where?”
“Make me a coffee, Clark. Would you please?  I wish to try your coffee.”
They entered into the house. Answering her request, Clark went to brew a coffee.
“You are still jealous. I simply walked.”
“Alone? So early?”
“I wished to see a dawn.”
“Very romantic. Never noticed that for you.”
“I did not see it a long time. Began to forget how does it appear.”
“You barely slept.”
“Ah, Clark! I have slept enough. I feel I have slept off all my life.”
“I did not get it. What is the matter? When have you slept?”
“There in the box. Very long. You know, Dave spent in box several long months.”
“What do you care about Dave?”
“Didn’t you understand? Here I am Dave. Or to say it more correctly: I am Olga now. We swapped. Yes, dear, Olga in computer now. You’ll have time to verify that today. And I am here, with you.”
“What are you talking about, damn it? What are you talking? – Clark repeated choking. – Dave is a man, Olga is a woman!”
“Well, so what? At least that is better than dog or monkey. I have little change the project, Clark. I apologize. I wished to find a body but never said that I want a man’s body. I already was a man and that bored me. And after all I always adored experiments. I was not homosexual but having set in the box I began to forget, what does it mean to be a man. And from a quite some time, I admit, I dreamed to become a woman. Real woman, for example as such beauty as Olga.”
“You deceived her, deceived me, deceived all, deceived…”
“No, not at all. We exchanged voluntary. She will get her own benefits. – Continuing careless chatter Olga poured coffee in cups and took a sip from one. – It is fine, excellent coffee. So long did not try it. Wonderful sensations. I’ll certainly have to describe you. And yet, I was always curious: what for Olga so in love with my slobbery friend?”
“My Lord! Dave! You slept with me!” – Clark began to feel nausea from memoirs.
“Naturally, Clark. And now I can admit: I am not dis-ap-poi-ded.”
