I used to never cry.

That was years ago-

Or maybe months.

It’s hard to keep track-

When you don’t keep track.

 

I used to never cry.

That was before I hurt him-

Before I never apologized-

Before I never saw him again-

Before I read his obituary.

 

I used to laugh a lot.

That was decades ago-

When I first met him.

He was different-

Kind, smart, talented.

All the things I wasn’t.

 

I used to laugh a lot.

That was before I was cruel.

First cruel to him-

Then cruel to me-

Then cruel to nobody.

 

I used to give up.

That was months ago.

I’d be the ‘bench warmer’-

The ‘towel boy’.

Those days are gone.

Now I’m better-

Stronger-

But still crying.

Crying because he’s gone.

 

And nothing will ever change that.
