There's something about the night that makes us reflect. Maybe it's the light of the moon that inspires us to think of who we really are and what we really want to be. Funny is how while our dreams come alive our nightmares awake as well. Sometimes the truly nightmarish parts of ourselves are just the company we need...when we muse in the moonlight.

“I remember”, the night embracing everything as the wind sung through the air. Beneath the moon, crescent like a crooked smile, a small town slumbered away with most of its residents tucked away. Standing atop of the ledge of the local bank, which had a whopping two stories, he stood quietly musing at the sight below his gaze. Muttering to the wind, it was a queer sight to see. A foreboding yet calm figure looked on as the small town quietly began its nighttime rituals. His velvet reds eyes scanning from the town below to the raven blue sky above and then the figure’s gaze drifted to the crooked smile hanging in the sky. “When I was still young and ignorant, I would speak to you my old friend” he quietly said with his eyes still locked on to the moon. “Oh how I would gossip to you with my old childhood dreams, oh how I would regal you with my stories of young lovesickness. Do you remember those times? Or like time, have all or our chats faded away? ” The figure subtly chuckled as he turned his gaze toward the town. His eyes darted from every street corner, they moved from side to side as he observed and took note of the peculiarities that unfolded before him. He fixated on the Walgreen’s that was situated on the corner of Piedmont and Hightower, inside the lights were colored a sickening fluorescent white that leaked out through the windows. A young girl looking no more than sixteen or even seventeen stood at the counter reading a magazine. People walked in and out of the store. A man walked in, bought a magazine with the vivacious form of a swimsuit model on the cover and a carton of cigarettes. “ A young couple came in and bought some bags of assorted snacks and quietly left, hand in hand. After finishing her duties, the young girl quietly returned to her reading. All the while the figure looked on quietly musing in his mind. “She’s probably reading some mindless celebrity bullshit, hmph humans are such boorish creatures.” The figure thought but while his mind said this, his eyes betrayed the truth locked within. In his eyes lay the desire to be able to stand at a counter and read the mindless drivel. In his eyes he wanted to be able to just walk into a store and buy snacks, cigarettes, or whatever he wanted without having any heavy hearted burdens. In his eyes, as he thought of the couple, he wanted to be able to feel the embrace of another’s hand clasped within his. “What pathetic little creatures, don’t you agree?” the figure said as his gaze returned to the moon above. He stood, like a blooming flower amongst dead weeds, like something eerily beautiful yet dangerous but with an aura of sadness. The quiet of the night was interrupted by the flapping of wings as a black flashed through the sky and landed behind the figure. “So…you’ve come” the figure said as the amorphous black shape sat behind him. “Why wouldn’t I have come to see my dear friend?” The mass replied with a playful yet horrible voice “did you feel the sting of your existence while watching the monkeys play?” The mass began to take shape as it stepped into the light. First its wings stretched out revealing long skinny fingers with skin stretching between them, connecting the fingers into a wing shape. The mass formed a body; it looked emaciated with two legs supporting its weight. The feet and each of the fingers ended in a curved claw, like that made by the glory of creation made for one specific purpose. That purpose being to kill. The legs were skinny and muscular, bent at the ankle; they looked as if they had come from some prehistoric beast long since dead. It had no facial features aside from two glaring red eyes and a mouth filled with pointed teeth, the entire body was black save for the skin in between the wings which were colored a dark grey. With half lidded eyes he crackled to the figure “how many nights is it now I’ve met you here while you look at the humans?” His eyes became even more slanted as a grayish tongue dripped ever so slightly from his nightmarish mouth. “How long?” he hissed “ How long what?” the figure replied never once averting his gaze from the town to stare at the beast at his back “How long do you think you’d last? I mean given the human’s track record they don’t really like anything scary or different. I mean one look at you, I mean when they’d figure out what you are…and what you’ve done. I’d bet they stake you and burn your corpse to cinders” The beast said as he cackled hoarsely. “It’s hilarious by the way, you wanting so much to join the humans and their parade of infinite stupidity.” It was at this point the figure turned those velvet red eyes to meet the glaring red eyes of his newfound beastly company. “I suppose you’re right” he admitted rather despondently. “Something like me could never belong…but still I dream you know.” The monstrous being hulked from his spot to the space next to the figure, they stood side by side by with both pairs of their eyes hooked on the town. “Sigh; Gregori, you are something else you know? Something quite fucking unique” The beast looked downwards “these scum-sucking bags of shit aren’t some ideal to strive towards…they’re cattle. Mindless beasts meant to be consumed by those made to be their superior…which is you. Do you honestly think just because humans can feel emotions that they are superior? PFFT having a heart makes you weak, remember that Gregori.” The beast finished his words of wisdoms and slinked back to the darkness, spreading his wings. “They’d never accept you, not ever Grigori.” The beast told Grigori with his back to him. “By the way it would seem that a little rat has snuck into your pantry and is currently taking nibbles of your food. If I were you…I’d exterminate this little pest, you’ll find him at the edge of the woods feasting. “With those final words the beast was gone and Grigori was left alone. “a rat huh? Well I certainly can’t have that now can I?” with a sickening crack of bone and flesh being contorted Grigori sprouted two enormous black wings and took the sky. The wings looked conspicuously like the wings of the beastly companion who had left Grigori’s side just minutes earlier. “WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU!” screeched the monster as he tore down trees in pursuit of his prey. The couple that had left the store that Grigori was so interested in had planned for a night of sexual fun. They set up their little love nest near a clearing by the edge of the forest however while the girl found herself reluctant to engage in sex with her male companion. She soon found he wasn’t who he appeared to be. After become increasingly frustrated and a failed attempt to force her into sex his body contorted into a grotesque form, bones snapped and flesh tore as his transformed before her. His arms became almost insect-like as the skin hardened and his hands became menacing claws while his legs broke apart to form for spindly spider legs. Most of his human skin was in tatters revealing grey skin slicked with blood and slime. His mouth sprouted mandibles and drool oozed from his mouth, one side of his face had been ripped away revealing two large black orbs that served as eyes. “WHEN I FIND YOU! I SWEAR I’LL RIP YOUR FUCKING HEART OUT!” he roared at he broke away trees that blocked his path. The girl had found a broken log that she managed to slide into, in the hopes that the beast would pass her over and she’d be able to sneak away. His footsteps thundered through the forest, ever closer to the hiding spot of the terrified young girl. “When I find you…” He sinisterly hissed “Oh, when I find you I’ll make you do all sorts of thing until I’m satisfied then I’ll skin you alive. WHERE ARE YOU!” he roared even louder. She quietly sobbed hoping and praying the horrible thing would just go away, but slowly he made his way toward the log which contained the girl. He could smell her fear and knelt his head down to the log and whispered “Hide and seek is over.” The insect creature slammed one of his monstrous claws down which shattered half of the long into splinters, revealing the sandy brown hair of his prey. “FOUND YOU, YOU LITTLE WHORE” he screamed with glee as he picked her up by the hair. Licking his lips he said “Now you and I are gonna have some fun. You won’t like it first, it may hurt but you’ll get used to it. Hell, you’ll enjoy it my sweet Then YOU’LL DIE FOR MAKING ME WORK SO FUCKING HARD!” The girl’s amber skin shone with tiny diamonds sliding down her cheek and was then promptly licked off by the monster’s thick tongue. “Hmph, well I guess my night became a whole lot more troublesome” a voice suddenly broke the intensity of the scene. The monstrous sigh turned his head and saw a figure in the shadows slowly emerge. Grigori entered the light of the moon revealing himself to the beauty and the beast. Grigori was a lightly tan man with young features, he wasn’t spectacularly tall but he had some height. Nor was he quite intimidating physically, he looked skinny but underneath the white V-necked T-shirt and his black denim jacket you couldn’t know if he had any muscle. But his eyes shone velvet red as his lips formed a scowl at the sight before him. “You shouldn’t be here, I’m giving you one warning but only one.” Gregori said as the monster looked onwards. “FUCK OFF” the beast dropped the girl and charged Grigori but he soon found that he wasn’t dealing with some ordinary human. In five minutes, Grigori had finished. The body of the beast lay motionless and in pieces as Grigori wiped blood from his mouth. After charging Grigori, the beast tried to hook him with one of his claws in order to crush him fast. But as things would seem, Grigori had a hand on the beast first. To be more specific he grabbed his wrist which he promptly broke in two. The beast screamed in agony as Grigori swiftly lept to his side and in a flash his slashed open the monster’s belly. Intestines and blood spurt out everything as the monster landed on the ground with a sickening thud. His final words slipped through his red stained lips. “W-wwhat…are…you?” Grigori stared down and softly whispered “Now you and I are gonna have some fun. You won’t like it first, it may hurt but you’ll get used to it.” Then he opened his mouth revealing two sets of sharp pointed teeth with two elongated canine fangs as the topper. Grigori sank his mouth into the throat of the dying devilish monster. The girl watched and stared and listened to the sickening sound of Grigori devouring the monster which moments ago almost raped and murdered her. The cracking of bone and slurping of flesh filled the night air. Grigori had gotten his fill and walked towards the girl wiping his face of blood. But before he could get within ten feet the girl screamed “GET AWAY FROM ME YOU FREAK! YOU MONSTER!” she then ran off towards town leaving Grigori at the scene. The words spoken to him by his companion echoed in his mind. “They’d never accept you, not ever Grigori, I mean one look at you, I mean when they’d figure out what you are…and what you’ve done. I’d bet they stake you and burn your corpse to cinders.” Grigori looked up towards the crooked smile of the sky and quietly said “You know my old friend, I truly despise when my conscience is right.” Grigori quietly smiled and remember the melancholy that had gripped him earlier that night. “I may not be human…but I am something quite unique isn’t that right Grigori?” Grigori asked his black winged monstrous companion who stood perched on a tree branch watching the entire scene with a crooked smile.
