A dark fog settled into the valley as the girl stumbled past fallen tree limbs and dead bushes. The cracking of twigs echoed throughout the area, but all she heard was the sound of her own heartbeat. She had to get back to safety. She had a job to do.

Within the forest was another person. A boy, of about sixteen, heading for the same place as the girl. He carried a sleek blade of silver buried in a ratty cloth.

They ran side by side in the dark forest, yet neither knew of the other. That didn't matter. All they knew was their missions. One was of life, one was of death. The girl's name was Alice. She was on the left, carrying an antidote to a harsh poison that was eating away a man's life not far away. The boy's knife was meant to be driven into the man's heart to stop him from chance of survival.

The thick darkness shielded them from each others view. Each thought that they were alone, heading to a destination so that they could fulfill their purpose. The girl ran with light, quick steps, desperate to save the man. The boy was breathing hard, determined to get there before the girl, not knowing she was within arms reach if he just tried. It didn't take long for the girl to realize the boy was there, to hear his gasps for air, to feel his heavy footfalls on the earth. She soon realized what was to become of her life.

Alice was bright and quick, but before long she needed to stop. She curled up on an ancient stump. That was when she heard the boy's steps, slower now, but still crunching across the debris on the forest floor. Thinking she heard someone, Alice dipped down under a low hanging branch, clutching the antidote tightly to her chest. She held her breath as the boy walked past, then let out a gasp as she recognized his face.

“Michael?”

The boy turned, pulling his knife from the cloth. The moonbeams reflected off it, darting around the trees like a laser. Alice, shocked to see the knife, quickly realized that Michael was not who he used to be. She took off running, knowing that the cottage of the man was close.

Michael quickly followed Alice's trail. She was heading at a quick pace to a cabin that was barely visible through the the numerous trees shooting up through the dense undergrowth. The man inside the cabin was very sick and desperately in need of the potion that Alice carried. However, Michael's goal was to make sure that neither Alice nor the man survived.

Alice was slim and quick, which allowed her to dart around trees. Michael, being a bit more bulky, had a harder time with this, and, as a result, he ran into more than one tree. Because of this, Alice arrived at the cabin first, slipping quickly through the doorway to where the man was laying upon a dirty cot. He feebly attempted to sit up, but poison had already seeped through his body. Alice quickly uncapped the antidote she carried.

At that moment, Michael reached the cabin, bursting through the door with gusto. His knife was pulled from its cloth and raised up, tightly grasped in Michael's left hand. He lunged towards Alice, who darted quickly away, reaching for an iron poker. While she was picking it up, Michael managed to slash her arm. Grunting with pain, Alice knew what she had to do, this man had to be saved. Wielding the poker as if it were a longsword, Alice set her stance to balance her weight. She began to duel Michael, a duel to the death.

After a few minutes of alternating circling and lunging, Alice took a leap of faith. She pushed the poker deep into Michael's chest. However, she didn't mange it before Michael lodged his knife into her abdomen. Alice stumbled backwards, watching Michael collapse as the blood began soaking into his jacket from the wound. Within minutes, he had ceased to breathe.

Alice managed to stand, holding firmly to the knife in her. She reached towards the potion which had rolled across the floor when she dove. The effort was immense, but she struggled through the pain and managed the drop the liquid antidote into the man's mouth.

Within an hour, he was perfectly fine, sitting up, wondering who had saved him. Lookout around, he saw a fair amount of blood. Astonished, he also noticed the body of a young man as well as one of a slim girl. Neither had survived the battle; however, the man had been saved. Unfortunately, he was the leader of World War III, brought back to destroy the world by his faithful daughter, Alice.
