My mum always said that no harm would come to me if I stayed well away from the woods. She was right.

A white horse cantered across the valley to the pond and started to drink from it,the man riding on his back was very tall and well built he carried a large gun on his strong tanned back,he didn't have many clothes but of the little clothes he was wearing he didn't seem very wealthy. "Rubes stop daydreaming and come give me a hand with tea" I was snapped back to reality after I felt a harsh jerking on my shoulders,it was my mum,her forehead wrinkling as she frowned at me. "Come on missus I'm not waiting here for you all day" she sighed in tiredness as she turned and walked into the small cottage we now call home,as I turned to walk inside a shadow from the nearby wood's caught my eye,a tall man on horseback, when I blinked it was gone.

I'm ruby stingwood, the adventurer ,my mum says I'm way too energetic to be cooped up inside all day, she's right, that's why we moved to the country, she said we needed to be free and away from all our annoying relative's. she said we needed nobody else, we could have fun all by ourselves and boy did we have fun. My mum always used to tell me tales about the woods and the people inside of it,the whispering trees and ten foot tall bear's and all sort's of scary animals that want to hurt you, sweet looking children that turn into dust the moment you touch them and all sorts of other ghastly creatures.

we didnt really live that near to anybody else, the nearest town was about 10 miles up the road, thats where Sheriff nottingham lived, he is one of the best story tellers Ive ever met,he's a tall man with a long black curly mustache and a mop of curly hair that is always hidden by his sheriff's hat. I remember the first day we moved in, he'd showed up on the back of his police horse asking mum all sorts of questions, mum got a bit angry and told him we didnt need him poking his nose into our buisness and she shut the door right in his face.

The next time he came round he told me one of his stories, well thats what i used to call them anyway, tales of fun and adventure that capture your mind and make you want to hear more, no, that's not what these were, they were true tales, tales of magic and adventure, the kind of thing that I just happened to be very interested in. It was hot and sunny, that's what I remember,I was sweating i remember it so clearly because it had been the hottest day in summer. The day when young patsy went missing. I remember it like it was an hour ago,her face, and what looked like a hand print and 10 big hooveprints all over her body.

Patsy had come to our cottage early that morning,I'd noticed her new hat straight away "Nice hat patsy" I'd remarked She'd walked quite a way so we invited her in whilst I got dressed, she declined our offer saying she'd wait outside,as I walked upstairs to my room I looked out my window to see patsy skipping happily across the grass she stopped as something caught her eye, I followed her gaze to the very edge of the woods,I couldent see anything, but whatever patsy could see she was scared of it,I banged on the window and as patsy turned her face I noticed her eyes, bright red and burning, all I could see were her eyes I jumped back in horror,I went back up to the window just in time to see patsy dissapear into the forest her hat stuck on a long branch high in the air. She was found moments later strewn across the road, with a bloodstained hand on her face and 10 hooveprints on her body, the sheriff didn't belive what i said i had seen,I was just a kid,I didn't know anything. Or did I? Mad flashes of lightning struck our cottage for weeks and weeks after patsy's death, the weather dried up and things started to return to planed as normal.

That was when I saw the man on the horse.

The days were warm, and the horse kept repeatedly appearing in the back of my mind,a plain white princess horse, better than any I'd seen,it was so elegant cantering across the fields and chomping delacatley on the thin strands of grass. The man was nowhere to be seen,I'd only seen him a few times, more and more as it came closer to summer,he was a big, well built man, very tanned, he was so tall I though he may have been able to touch the sky,he wore very little clothes and every time I saw him he was on horseback, never walking. It was a hot day,not as hot as the day it had been when patsy went missing, but it was hot,I was sweating and my mum had promised to come out,she was getting dressed when I walked out the door,I couldent help remembering patsy, her red eyes and how they looked as if they were on fire, burning out of her skull, she didn't even look like she was in pain, that's what I was confused about,it was like she wasnt even there, like she could only focus on what she had seen at the edge of the woods. the weirdest thing was, patsy just dissapeared,no screaming and then reappeared seconds later, all dirty with the handprint and hooveprints.

A dark shadow flashed across the side of the woods I turned and looked,a man was stood there,he had bloody hands and the horse stood next to him "Hey" I shouted loudly to them, but the man did not reply. "I'm talking to you,you killed patsy didn't you? Your the one that patsy saw, what did you do to her, tell me" I was fuming and I wasn't going to let this man get away I was running before I even knew it,I ran faster than I had ever ran in my life I wasn't aware of my eyes burning until I felt my whole body burn, every footstep I took it seemed like the man got further away, hands grabbed at me but I shook them off,I didn't want people to stop me from finding out what he'd done to patsy I needed to know, i needed to put my mind at rest, i needed to stop the pain in my chest whenever i saw  i didn't need to look to see who it was grabbing me,it would be my mum and probably others who had heard me shouting but my eyes were solidly focused on the man "I will find out what you did to her,I will find out" I screamed and with that I stopped and let the hands drag me back I never took my gaze off the man and I swear just before I blacked out i saw the man laughing at me,urgh.
