This poem was inspired by the violence committed by the youth in my community. We need to take a stand against what's killing our youth.

Standing so beautiful, standing so tall

I’m calling my generation, calling us all.

Now is the time we stand up and speak.

Speak against all the crime and violence committed this week.

Yes, they’re cowards in hiding.

Not law abiding.

What’s worse is how silent we be…

When criminals destroy our harmony.

Seeing the crimes committed; seeing the criminals face;

Police asks us information…we deny being in the place.

Standing so beautiful, standing so tall

I’m calling my generation, calling us all.

No longer should we sit and wait for change.

No longer should we just hope and pray for peace.

We have to go out and demand it from our people.

No longer should we keep silent while things are falling apart.

We should have spoken up from the start!

This is our time, this is our day,

We’re finally going to have our say.

“Mr. Criminal, we don’t want you here,

we don’t want you there,

We don’t want you near our children,

We don’t want you anywhere.

This is our community, this is our city.

These are our streets,

These are our schools.

We take them back!”

Standing so beautiful, standing so tall

We claim back our generation…each one and all.
