The daisy and the dream

Night time fell over the world. A gentle breeze drifted from the ocean and carried across the English Isle. It turned into a blissfully ignorant wind sweeping unwanted tin cans and leaves along with it, tearing apart pages of an old newspaper from the gutter and dragging it along until it caught and blocked a drain, more destruction, the gale blew on.

Many people shivered as the strong gust tried to carry them off too, without success. It roamed, angry at the little humans who refused to move, only shiver at his icy chill.

A likely candidate appeared at an opening in one of the big square stones. The wind rushed to the little silver-haired girl, who looked so light and fragile it’d be easy to whisk her away. But something stopped the window, it battled against the invisible force shield to no avail. So it just sat there and watched the innocent creature.

Mercedes watched the night with interest. She gazed longingly at the stars shining too high in the deep blue sky for her to reach. She stared at the wind, watching it close around her house but it would just have to be content with just blowing around the trees and plants in daddy’s garden. She backed away from the window and jumped noiselessly into bed before her mummy came in to check on her.

“Sweetie?” the mother whispered, peering around the door to see her angel’s usually blue eye’s closed, her breathing was slow and even. She looked so serene in her sleep; the mother smiled and closed the door without making a sound.

Mercedes uttered a short sweet yawn and turned over, snuggling herself deeper into her lavender covers, deciding she was tired and would sleep now.

The wind watched the tiny girl’s eyes droop and close. It daren’t rattle the window again in fear of waking the sleeping angel from her sleep. It drifted off, a calm breeze once more.

Mercedes fell asleep.

She opened her eyes wide in surprise at her surroundings. Beneath her were millions and millions of grains of intense orange sand.Above her reigned a sky of endless, crimson clouds and in the distance, Mercedes could only see fire. It gave the illusion of being a desert but she just felt cool and comfortable. She giggled angelically as she walked over the tickly sand that barely moved under her weight.

A loud bang and cloud of orange sand burst up in the distance, it disappeared almost as suddenly as it sounded and Mercedes only caught a glimpse of the event before the sand disappeared into the horizon. She continued walking, un-shook, still enjoying the sand in-between her toes like when mummy and daddy took her to the seaside. She giggled again, remembering when she splashed mummy in the salty water. She’d learnt how to swim that day. Left arm, kick, right arm, kick or she could just float on the surface.

She wondered where mummy and daddy were now, probably asleep in their bedroom now, she better not wake them.

She sat down on the sand, tired from walking, she felt her back lean against something hard. She turned around and found herself leaning on a small wall of sand that felt as hard as stone.

“What’s your name?” A voice asked her. She looked over at her other side. A boy, older than her, maybe 9 or 10 with bright red hair and burning red eyes looked back at her. He was fiddling with a daisy in his hands as he sat next to her. “Mercedes” her voice was barely above a breathe, but her shy effort carried to the boy and stunned him by the innocence of her voice.

“I’m Ryder” he grinned at her. She looked down at the pretty flower in his hands, she loved daisies.

“You want this?” he held it out for her.

She nodded timidly and took it “thank you” she smiled. Her voice louder and clearer. She held the daisy in-between two fingers and twisted it around, examining it. The boy watched her. Suddenly he lend down and kissed Mercedes’ cheek softly. “Will you be my wife?” he asked, watching her reaction. Her eyes widen and she touched her reddening cheek lightly.

She considered his offer for a moment and nodded, still surprised by the what the boy had done. Ryder she repeated his name in her head and looked over at him. “Ryder?” she asked. He bend down and pecked her gently on her soft pink lips. She gasped. “I’ll come for you when the war’s ended” he whispered and disappeared in a rush of sand. She sighed and watched the daisy while she twirled it like a ballerina dancing.

Outside, the dawn, absent of wind, broke easily through the window and crested the sleeping angel’s eyes. They fluttered open.

The dream, the daisy and the boy, gone.

Maybe it’s an opening to a story, maybe it was just a dream =D

Hope you liked it, just a simple short story than I had fun writing and I hope you enjoyed reading it!
