What if the mask should fall?

Behind the Mask

By Elton Camp

A person’s true nature is hard to tell
Even if you think you know him well

We wear masks in order to conceal
The matters we dare not to reveal

For many a genial, smiling face
Covers desires that are a disgrace

If our inner thoughts were broadcast,
Friends and relatives would be aghast

“I never imagined you felt that way!”
They would exclaim in deepest dismay

“You seemed to be kindly and benign.
From the human race you should resign.”

So in the deepest recesses of our brain
Such inclinations must safely remain

“I’m not at all that way,” some will claim
While hiding a secret they’ll never name

If their mask should somehow fall away
They, and all, would experience dismay

So dear reader, whoever you may be,
Are thinking, “He wrote this about me!”

Thanks. I seldom write on serious subjects, preferring light humor. Occasionally, I toss out one like this. Elton

It still reads like light verse, so good job.
