Malleus Maleficarum, the Hammer of Witches

By Elton Camp

It was a misleading book to hate and fear
One of the most damaging in world literature

In 1484 came a papal bull, witches to condemn
And witch hunts should begin, according to him

Sprenger and Kramer were authorized for a book
That told about witches and how they should look

That evil book was filled full of fanciful tales
However, in time, as authoritative it prevails

Witchcraft accusation no proof of guilt required
To force a confession was all that was desired

Witches were blamed for all manners of wrong
Because it was to the evil devil they all belong

Even at the most absurd the accusers wouldn’t stop
Man impotent, woman barren, hail destroyed crop

It was held those most likely to place a hex
Were widows, poor, elderly of the female sex

How was it possible a witch to identify?
There were several ways such to certify

To put them on a scale might decide their fate
For the book said a witch had little or no weight

A witch thrown into water wouldn’t sink
So deserved execution the authors did think

The witch was stripped to see marks on the skin
Scar, wart or birthmark found, her life would end

A more harmful and vicious book is hard to spy
For it caused thousands of innocent people to die

Invention of the printing press gave this horrible book a worldwide distribution
