The Backstory

The city of Palacio Muerte is one that is like any other megacity in the United States. There is a side that most tourists see, the side that is an architectural masterpiece with buildings reaching heights in the hundreds of feet, with attractions such as the beach and tons of filming studios. The kind of side of the city that makes people want to move there, and live there forever. Then, there is the side that a good portion of the locals see where crimes are only known when they are reported on the news. Then, there is the side where crime happens on the street corner, the side where gangs have shootouts, where drugs are dealt, and where ladies of the night prance around. But sometimes, there is a fourth side. In this side, the last two sides are melded together. This fourth side is our focus.

Let’s go back to 1999, where we meet Toby Dorsey, a 17 year old male. In stature, he wasn’t an intimidating guy, standing at an impressive 6ft 3inches, but he was stick thin. This, combined with his oak wood brown eyes, jet black hair that was never fully in place, an egg shaped face, and t-shirts with phrases such as “It’s not pink, it’s lightish red”, he was never really seen as a threatening guy, and he wasn’t, not back then. With him were his friends, all 17 as well, Alex Nathans, Hunter Battle, and Cameron Teel. Alex was much like Toby in stature, only slightly shorter. His appearance was different though, in that he had brown hair like mud, and brown eyes of a similar color. At this point in time, he had long hair, kind of like a girl. Hunter Battle was a bit different in stature to the other two. He was taller at 6ft 5inches, but still, not very big. He had black hair that looked almost brown and brown eyes that looked almost black. Rounding out this little group was Cameron Teel. He was 5ft 11inches, had black hair and (you guessed it) brown eyes.

It was in 2000 when this group changed forever. They got hold of some pot, stopped focusing on school, and just barely got through high school. The group started to get involved in crime, becoming criminals that were well known in the wrong side of the city. They did job after job, making money in amounts they thought they could never spend, hundreds of thousands of dollars, enough to pay bills for a long time. Then, in 2004, during a job in which they had to stop a competing dealer’s deal from going on, Cameron was shot and killed. Each one blamed the other for the incident, and the group was disbanded, and stayed that way for 3 years, until one day in 2007.

Getting the Band Back Together

On the 2nd of February in 2007, 3 years after Cameron’s death, Alex, heard his phone ringing, so he answered it. “Hello?” he said as he answered the phone. “Alex, it’s me, Hunter. It’s been 3 years since we last spoken, and we need to wrap up this Cameron thing once and for all. Come to my home address at 555 Kay Lane, up in the hills.”. “Alright, I’ll be there in an hour. The question is, will Toby be there?” asked Alex. “Yeah, I called him earlier.” “Alright, see you in an hour.” Hunter hung up the phone, and breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe he could get the gang back together and get some money so he can pay his gambling debts. After the crew broke up, Hunter was left broke. He turned to gambling in his time of need, and got a few lucky hands, and was hooked. It was all fun and games when he was winning, but then Hunter felt the crushing blow of defeat over and over, like someone was running him over with a defeat truck. He lost all of his money, but then got some good luck. His Aunt had died, and he got her house and her $100,000 inheritance. From there, he lost the $100,000 and owes even more. On top of this, he is about to lose the house. He needed this to work.

An hour later, both Alex and Toby arrived at Hunter’s, and he invited them in. They all adjourned to the living room, where they stared at each other awkwardly for about five minutes. The awkwardness was broken when Alex said “I’ll be honest, I don’t care anymore. I don’t want to know who was responsible for his death; I want my friends and my crew back.” This last part was not missed by Toby who asked “What do you mean you want your crew back? Are you saying you want to do a job?” “That’s exactly what I’m saying.” proclaimed Alex. “Good, because I need money, like now.” replied Toby. They both looked at Hunter. “Are you in?” inquired Alex. “Hell yeah!” exclaimed Hunter. “That’s why I invited y’all here, so I could get the crew back together.”

The Plan

“Alright, this is an easy job, as it’s just a convenience store, so here’s how this will work: Hunter you get the getaway vehicle. I know you know a guy, so just make sure the vehicle is powerful and can hold all of us and a lot of cash. Toby and I will go inside the store and hold it up. Once we get the money, we dash. There is no need to kill the clerk unless he puts up a fight. Do you understand that Toby?” said Alex. “I’m hurt that you would think that I would kill an innocent man.” remarked Toby in a mock hurt tone. “Let’s get back on subject. After Toby and I secure the money we split it up, getaway, and don’t talk to each other for a while. Is everyone ok with the plan?” “I have a question.” said Toby. “What about what we’re going to wear on the heist?” “Wear a mask and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.” replied Alex. “Alright let’s get this show on the road.”

The Heist

A week later, they met a block away from the store. As Toby and Alex were waiting, a thought occurred to Toby. “Hey Alex, why do you need this money?” Alex fired back with the same question, and so conversation quickly died. After 25 minutes of silence filed only with the whoosh of the cars flying by, Hunter pulled up in the getaway vehicle, one that was unexpected.

“A shuttle bus? Are you freaking kidding me? What are we going to do, shuttle our way to the getaway vehicle?!” exclaimed Toby. “Hey man, this is what Alex asked me to get. It’s powerful and has a lot of space.” fired back Hunter. “It will have to do. Let’s just get in and get this done.” interjected Alex. They pulled up to the store, and proceeded to place on their masks. “Toby, why is your mask a horse mask?” asked Alex. “Reasons we can discuss afterwards.” was his reply. They hopped out of the shuttle bus, and walked into the store, immediately point their shotguns at the clerk, and holding out a bag. “Fill it up with everything you have in the register and in any safes that may be in the back room.” shouted Alex. The clerk, for fear of his life, did what he was asked, but not before signaling the police. After the clerk had put everything in the bag, he pleaded for his life. His pleas didn’t sway Alex, who shot the clerk in the face.

“YO, WHY DID YOU DO THAT?! WE WERE SUPPOSED TO LEVE HIM ALIVE!” screamed Toby at Alex. “I just love splattering brains. I don’t need the money, but it is an added bonus. I did that because that’s why I do all of these, to kill.” said Alex. Knowing that they had no time to talk about it, Toby picked up the bag full of money, and he and Alex ran toward the shuttle bus, sirens blaring behind them. They got in, and Hunter stepped on the gas pedal, police following. Now was the hard part of the entire heist; getting away from the cops.

They tore down Main Street, onto the main freeway, passing cars left and right, weaving in and out of traffic. Cops were shooting at them, but no cools were lost in the bus. Everyone remained calm, and Toby and Alex shot back, while Hunter was at the wheel. “Are you guys trying to get the cops off us? Because if so, you’re failing. Badly.” remarked Hunter. “Shut up.” said Alex. So they continued to drive, until finally, they got away from the cops. It was in the brief window of peace that they figured out that the split would be $20,000 each. “That’s a pretty successful first heist.” said Toby. “Yeah” remarked Alex. “Hey, does anyone else think that we lost those cops to easi-.” He was interrupted by sirens, and then cops surrounding them. One of them got a shot at Toby and it hit him straight through the brain, killing him on the spot, and leaving a huge blood stain on the bus. “Hunter drive!” shouted Alex. “No, we can’t get out, but I’m not letting them win either.” Hunter grabbed Toby’s gun off the floor, put it to his mouth, and pulled the trigger. “NOOOOOOOOOO!” shrieked Alex. He knew that he had to keep going however, so he got to the drivers wheel and drove the bus, heading toward the underground public transport. The cops manage to shoot out the tires of the bus, and so Alex makes a run for the transportation with $60,000 on his back. He is able to make it down the steps of the transportation place, but is then shot to death by multiple officers. Before he died however Alex said something very softly “I was the one who killed Cameron.”
