In many of the verses in the Qur’an, we can read what the inhabitants of Mecca thought about Muhammad. Those who knew him best – his neighbors – called him a madman, a mad poet, demon-possessed and a magician. He was viewed as a bewitched poet or a fortune-teller. His was not the impression of a normal man to the Meccans, but that of a mentally disturbed person who often fell into a trance. Let us consider some Qur'anic verses to prove our point.

Surah 10:2: Is it a matter of wonderment to men that We have sent Our inspiration to a man from among themselves? - That he should warn mankind (of their danger), and give the good news to the Believers that they have before their Lord the lofty rank of truth. (But) say the Unbelievers: “This is indeed an evident sorcerer!” (Yusuf Ali)

Surah 15:6: “And they say: O thou unto whom the Reminder is revealed, lo! Thou art indeed a madman!” (Pickthall)

Surah 17:47-48: We are fully aware of what they wish to hear when they listen to you; and what they say when they converse in private; and when the wrongdoers say, You are only following a man who is bewitched! See to what they liken you to! (W. Khan)

Surah 25:8: And the evildoers say, ‘The man you follow is simply under a spell.’ (A. Haleem)

Surah 37:35-36: “For when it was said unto them, There is no god save Allah, they were scornful and said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?” (Pickthall)

Surah 38:4: They are surprised that a Warner should come to them from among themselves. They say, ‘This is a magician, a great liar.’ (W. Khan)

Surah 44:14: Yet they turn away from him and say: “Tutored by others, a man possessed!” (Yusuf Ali)

Surah 81:22: Your companion (Muhammad) does not suffer from any mental illness. (Sarwar)

But even more disturbing is the fact that Allah himself had to reassure Muhammad that he is not mad or possessed. Something must be seriously wrong for Muhammad to be comforted in this manner. Consider the following evidences:

Surah 52:29-30: Therefore, proclaim thou the praises (of thy Lord): for by the Grace of thy Lord, thou art no (vulgar) soothsayer, nor art thou one possessed. Or do they say: - “A Poet! We await for him some calamity (hatched) by Time!” (Yusuf Ali)

Surah 68:2: Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (Yusuf Ali)

Muhammad’s contemporaries saw him as a lying demon possessed sorcerer who fabricated scriptures. Naturally, all of these Qur'anic verses are trying to prove that Muhammad was not possessed. However, in the process, the Qur'an unwittingly reveals the opinion of Muhammad by his contemporaries based upon their observation of his behavior. While the strange conduct of Muhammad – especially so when he receives his revelations – is not denied in the Qur'an and the Hadith, it is but given a spiritual explanation by Muslims. But in actual fact, Muhammad himself exhibited fear and doubt concerning the manner in which he received his revelations.

Mizanu’l Haqq, page 345:

Ibn Ishaq says that, before the Revelation first began to descend upon him, Mohammed's friends feared that he was suffering from the evil eye: and that, when it came upon him, almost the same illness attacked him again…On the authority of 'Amr ibn Sharhabil it is stated that Muhammad said to Khadijah, "When I was alone I heard a cry: 'O Muhammad, O Muhammad."' In tradition (?????) it is stated that he said, "I fear lest I should become a magician, lest one should proclaim me a follower of the Jinn"; and again: "I fear lest there should be madness" (or demoniac possession ????) "in me". After an accession of shivering and shutting his eyes, there used to come over him what resembled a swoon, his face would foam, and he would roar like a young camel.”

Other Hadiths mention that when inspiration was sent down to him, Muhammad’s countenance changed and appears troubled at the happening. He also became incredibly heavy, so much so that his camel, if he was sitting on it, buckled under his weight. Zaid ibn Thabith reported:

Insanu’l Uyun as quoted in Mizanu’l Haqq, page 346:

Once his leg fell upon mine, and, by Allah, there is no such heavy leg as was that of the Apostle of Allah....As often as the Prophet received inspiration, it seemed as if his soul was being taken from him, for he had always a kind of swoon and looked like one intoxicated.”

These forms of behavior were not exhibited by any of the prophets of the true God. And we can be sure that God did not send the angel Gabriel to Muhammad. God will not send his angel six-hundred years after sending his Son to earth to inform an illiterate desert bandit that He has no son. The Holy Bible clearly states:

1 John 2:22-23: Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist, denying the Father and the Son. Everyone who denies the Son does not have the Father either. Whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

Likewise, the true God could never have sent Gabriel to reveal to Muhammad that his Son had never been put to death. The sole purpose of his Son’s birth here on earth was to reconcile the world of mankind to Him through the sacrificial death of his Son on the torture stake.

Colossians 1:18-20: “He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God saw good for all fullness to dwell in him, and through him to reconcile again to himself all other things by making peace through the blood he shed on the cross.”

The evidences from Muslim sources themselves point to the conclusion that: (1) The revelations Muhammad actually received, did not come from Jehovah, the true God. (2) The spirit that spoke to Muhammad is clearly not a divine spirit of God, but rather an ungodly power that motivated him to commit gross acts of wickedness and indecency. The voices that Muhammad heard were actually the voices of wicked demonic spirits. These voices delivered contradictory messages to Muhammad. He was victimized by the demons because he was unacquainted with the knowledge of the true God. Satan had also tried to influence Jesus, but Jesus rebuked him by quoting the powerful inspired words of God in the Holy Scriptures. (Matthew 4:3-10). However, Muhammad succumbed to the teachings of demons. He also became a victim of Jewish and Christian apostates when he accepted their erroneous teachings.

We will now put Muhammad on the witness stand to see if his moral character during his prophetic career qualifies him as a prophet of the true God. We will only use sources acceptable to Muslims to evaluate him. Islam stands and falls on the character of Muhammad.

Muhammad the Suicidal

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 87, Number 111:

Narrated 'Aisha: But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while and the Prophet became so sad as we have heard that he intended several times to throw himself from the tops of high mountains and every time he went up the top of a mountain in order to throw himself down, Gabriel would appear before him and say, "O Muhammad! You are indeed Allah's Apostle in truth" whereupon his heart would become quiet and he would calm down and would return home. And whenever the period of the coming of the inspiration used to become long, he would do as before, but when he used to reach the top of a mountain, Gabriel would appear before him and say to him what he had said before.

Muhammad the Delusional

Sahih Muslim, Book 030, Number 5654:

Jabir b. Samura reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: I recognise the stone in Mecca which used to pay me salutations before my advent as a Prophet and I recognise that even now.

Muhammad the Bewitched

Sahih Muslim, Book 026, Number 5428:

A'isha reported that a Jew from among the Jews of Banu Zuraiq who was called Labid b. al-A'sam cast spell upon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) with the result that he (under the influence of the spell) felt that he had been doing something whereas in fact he had not been doing that. (This state of affairs lasted) until one day or during one night Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) made supplication (to dispel its effects).

Muhammad the Liar

Ishaq 567:

Muhammad informed Umar (the second Caliph), and he called the Prophet a liar.

Sahih Bukhari,Volume 5, Book 59, Number 369:

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: Allah's Apostle said, "Who is willing to kill Ka'b bin Al-Ashraf who has hurt Allah and His Apostle?" Thereupon Muhammad bin Maslama got up saying, "O Allah's Apostle! Would you like that I kill him?" The Prophet said, "Yes," Muhammad bin Maslama said, "Then allow me to say a false thing (i.e. to deceive Kab).” The Prophet said, "You may say it."

Muhammad the Anti-Semite

Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 6985:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews.

Sahih Bukhari,Volume 4, Book 56, Number 791:

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "The Jews will fight with you, and you will be given victory over them so that a stone will say, 'O Muslim! There is a Jew behind me; kill him!' "

Muhammad the Briber

Sahih Bukhari,Volume 4, Book 55, Number 558:

So the Quraish and the Ansar became angry and said, "He (i.e. the Prophet’) gives the chief of Najd and does not give us." The Prophet said, "I give them so as to attract their hearts (to Islam).”

Muhammad the Mass Murderer

Ishaq 464:

The Jews were made to come down, and Allah’s Messenger imprisoned them. Then the Prophet went out into the marketplace of Medina, and he had trenches dug in it. He sent for the Jewish men and had them beheaded in those trenches. They were brought out to him in batches. They numbered 800 to 900 boys and men.

Ishaq 465:

“Then the Apostle divided the property, wives, and children of the Qurayza among the Muslims. Allah’s Messenger took his fifth of the booty.”

Tabari VIII:38:

The Messenger of Allah commanded that all of the Jewish men and boys who had reached puberty should be beheaded. Then the Prophet divided the wealth, wives, and children of the Banu Qurayza Jews among the Muslims.

Tabari VII:97:

The morning after the murder of Ashraf, the Prophet declared, ‘Kill any Jew who falls under your power.’

Muhammad the Pedophile

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64:

Narrated By 'Aisha : That the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).

Muhammad the Terrorist

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220:

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "I have been sent with the shortest expressions bearing the widest meanings, and I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy), and while I was sleeping, the keys of the treasures of the world were brought to me and put in my hand." Abu Huraira added: Allah's Apostle has left the world and now you, people, are bringing out those treasures.

Sahih Muslim, Book 004, Number 1066:

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: I have been helped by terror (in the heart of the enemy); I have been given words which are concise but comprehensive in meaning; and while I was asleep I was brought the keys of the treasures of the earth which were placed in my hand.

Surah 8:67:

“It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise.” (Pickthall)

Muhammad the Plunderer

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 53, Number 351:

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: Allah's Apostle said, “Booty has been made legal for me.”

Muhammad the Hypocrite

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 157:

Narrated Al-Miswar b. Makhrama: I heard Allah's Apostle who was on the pulpit, saying, "Banu Hisham bin Al-Mughira have requested me to allow them to marry their daughter to Ali bin Abu Talib, but I don't give permission, and will not give permission unless 'Ali bin Abi Talib divorces my daughter in order to marry their daughter, because Fatima is a part of my body, and I hate what she hates to see, and what hurts her, hurts me."

While Muhammad supported polygamy as taught in the Qur’an, he did not want the husband of his daughter to practice polygamy while he is married to her. Why the double standard?

Muhammad the Sex Devotee

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 142:

Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet used to pass by to have sexual relation with all his wives in one night, and at that time, he had nine wives.

Muhammad the Assassinator

Ishaq 675-676:

Asma D. Marwan was of B. Umayyya b. Zayd. When Abu `Afak had been killed she displayed disaffection…Blaming Islam and its followers she said: ‘I despise B. Malik and al-Nabit and `Auf and B. al-Khazraj…You obey a stranger who encourages you to murder for booty. You are greedy men. Is there no honor among you?’ Upon hearing those lines Muhammad said, ‘Will no one rid me of this woman?’ Umayr, a zealous Muslim, decided to execute the Prophet’s wishes. That very night he crept into the writer’s home while she lay sleeping surrounded by her young children. There was one at her breast. Umayr removed the suckling babe and then plunged his sword into the poet. The next morning in the mosque, Muhammad, who was aware of the assassination, said, ‘You have helped Allah and His Apostle.’ Umayr said. ‘She had five sons; should I feel guilty?’ ‘No,’ the Prophet answered. ‘Killing her was as meaningless as two goats butting heads.’” (See also Ibn Sa`d's Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir, translated by S. Moinul Haq, volume 2, page 31)

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 59, Number 370:

Narrated Al-Bara bin Azib: Allah's Apostle sent a group of persons to Abu Rafi. Abdullah bin Atik entered his house at night, while he was sleeping, and killed him.

Tabari VIII:181:

The Messenger ordered six men and four women to be assassinated.

Muhammad the Merciless

Ishaq 308:

When the Apostle ordered him to be killed `Uqba said, 'But who will look after my children?' 'Hell', he said, and `Asim b. Thabit b. Abu'l-Aqlah al-Ansari killed him according to what Abu `Ubayda b. Muhammad b. `Ammar b. Yasir told me. (See also Tabari IX:121)

Muhammad the Thief

Ishaq: 288:

“Allah divided the booty stolen from the first caravan after he made spoils permissible. He gave four-fifths to those He had allowed to take it and one-fifth to His Apostle.”

Muhammad the Torturer

Tabari VIII:123:

Kinanah b. al-Rabi b. al-Huqyaq who had the treasure of B. Nadir was brought to the Messenger of God, who questioned him; but he denied knowing where it was. Then the messenger of God was brought a Jew who said to him, “I have seen Kinanah walk around this ruin every morning.” The Messenger of God said to Kinanah: “What do you say? If we find it in your possession, I will kill you.” “All right,” he answered. The Messenger of God commanded that the ruin should be dug up, and some of the treasure was extracted from it. Then he asked him for the rest of it. Kinanah refused to surrender it; so the Messenger of God gave orders concerning him to al-Zubayr b. al-‘Awwam, saying, “torture him until you root out what he has.” Al-Zubayr kept twirling his firestick in his breast until Kinanah almost expired; then the Messenger of God gave him to Muhammad b. Maslamah, who beheaded him to avenge his brother Mahmud b. Maslamah.” (End of Quote)

Surah 5:33: The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs is an awful doom. (Pickthall)

Sahih Muslim, Book 38, Number 4359:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The verse "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Apostle, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite side or exile from the land...most merciful" was revealed about polytheists. If any of them repents before they are arrested, it does not prevent from inflicting on him the prescribed punishment which he deserves.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 82, Number 795:

Narrated Anas: The Prophet cut off the hands and feet of the men belonging to the tribe of 'Uraina and did not cauterise (their bleeding limbs) till they died.

The above list describing Muhammad’s criminal character is provided by the most authentic Islamic sources. These are the testimonies of devout Muslims who are defenders of the Islamic faith. These testimonies are based on eye-witness accounts of early Muslims who lived with Muhammad. These devout followers of Muhammad have no reason, whatsoever, to fabricate these stories. In fact, they viewed Muhammad’s conduct as divinely designed. Their devotion to him was so absolute that could not even perceive the wickedness he committed in the name of Allah. They emulated him and continued in the same wicked course after his death.

Even so, the above list is not complete. Time and space will not permit us to go on listing all the sins and atrocities of Muhammad. They are too many to decipher. For instance, Muhammad was also a rapist, a warmonger, a wife-beater, a slave owner, an animal hater, a polygamist who even exceeded the Islamic limits, an idolater and the list goes on.

A true prophet will not act the way as Muhammad did. He will not force his faith on the people. He wins them over by his virtue. He will not wage war on others or spread his message. He will not command armies. He will not kill. Yet, Muhammad committed all these evil deeds. And Muslims are told in the Qur'an to emulate him:

Surah 33:21: Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern of conduct for any one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the Praise of Allah. (Yusuf Ali)
