I stare out at the wide, sparkling ocean, contemplating whether I made the right decision to leave my perfect home. There is no safety across these waters. My whole life, I have been hiding in the shadows of my treetop home, kept safe by everyone else. I was the princess of the trees, the queen of my home. But now, I have left my entire life to explore new places. But these places are dangerous. I have been warned not to go there, for that island is the island of death. No one has ever escaped it alive.
"No, please!" My mother screams, trying to break free of my step-fathers grip. "Don't go! You can't let her go!" She turns to him. "Please, Silver, tell her!"
We are the only ones on the beach, apart from my step sister. Everyone else will still be up in the trees, swinging from vine to vine. Not like a monkey, though, although comparing my people to monkeys makes me chuckle.
"It's all right, mother." I turn to face her, with the wind blowing my hair wildly. I sigh as the cool waves splach over my bare feet. "Please, don't worry about me."
"How can you ask that of us?!" She sobs, reaching out for me. "You will die!"
"No, I won't. I'll be fine, please don't be scared for me."
"Emmie, please stay! You are princess of the trees! We barely leave the treetop, and now all of a sudden you want to go there?" "
I don't believe it is the place of the dead. I think it's another place, like this one." I smile, trying to convince my mother I'll be fine.
"But what if that is not the case? What if it is true?!"
"Then I guess I won't know until I reach it, will I?"
"You won't, because you are not going!"
"Elmarie!"Silver whispers, with a smile that only I was meant to see. "It is her decision, is it not?"
I give him an evil glare. I know he wants me dead, so that my younger step-sister, Charmine can become princess of the trees. I love her, she has done me no wrong, but I hate Silver. He has taken over my life, my home, and worst of all, my mother. She would do anything for him, anything. And I hate that. He's a cruel man, nothing nice about him. I just wish that my mother could see that. But instead, she thinks he's marvellous, perfect, absolutely wonderful. It almost makes me vomit to see them together.
"Silver." I say, with no emotion whatsoever in my voice. "Let my mother go."
"What?" He looks at me with a frown.
He mutters and releases her. She dashes to me, leaving deep footprints in the sand.
"Elmarie, leave her!" Silver snaps, treating her like a dog. "Let her go if she wants! If she chooses to go die, then it is her own fault!"
"Silver, please! Tell her she has to say!" He doesn't reply, but I can see he is going to grab her hair.
"Don't you hurt my mother when I'm gone!" I look at him with nothing but disgust. "If you do one thing to her, I swear that I will kill you myself!"
"Oh, don't worry." He smirks. "She'll be fine. And anyway, Charmine will fit your role very nicely."
"I didn't ask about Charmine. I know she'll be a better person than you are."
"Emmie!" My mother pulls away, the tears on her face drying in. She sniffs a little. "Don't speak to Silver like that. You know that I love him, and he is a nice man. Please, I don't want this moment to be spent bickering."
"You are right, mother. I am so sorry for telling Silver the truth, and in future I will lie to keep everyone else happy."
"Emmie... If you are leaving, then go now, before I get worse."
I sigh, and take one last look to the beautiful, peaceful world I have known for my whole life then wade out to the water and climb onto the boat. I breathe deeply, and row the boat.
