I always have so much running through my mind, even for the small and simplest situations. One day I was waiting for a bus, it inspired me to write this. xxx

The Stranger

I am sitting at a bus stop and it’s a Thursday. I wait and wait but no bus comes. I continue to wait humming a tune in my mind to keep myself amused.

Just at that moment I see a figure approaching out the corner of my eye. I don’t turn my head to look because then I would have to smile and acknowledge them and I don’t have the confidence to do that. If I was to turn my head and stare they would think I was odd and I would embarrass myself. The figure has nearly reached the bench that I am sitting on. I do not turn to look at them but I do get a glimpse. She is a middle aged woman. She is now sitting down. She is going to join my impatient world of waiting for the bus which I feel may never come. Neither one of us has verbally greeted each other, but what would we say? Maybe I should slide along the bench a little more to give her more space, but such a movement may seem to over the top. I quickly move my bag onto the floor so I do not appear impolite or rude. She may have already judged me but I expect or at least hope that she will have changed her judgment.

I wonder who she is. Does she also wonder who I am? I can feel the wonder in the air around us. Maybe she is a second cousin of mine who ill never formally meet. Maybe she was the woman in the car in front of me just the other day. Maybe she is the woman of whom my friends will share a lift with tomorrow. Maybe she is the mother of the boy I will fall in love with. Maybe she is just a woman who I will sit next to this Thursday waiting for a bus.

There is a rumble in the distance, it is here. The woman and I both turn our heads towards the sound. Our wait is almost over. I take one step towards the edge of the curb and though I know that the woman is aware but to show that I am aware too.

Now I hesitate and become tense, it the game of who will step onto the bus first. I receive one point for being here first at the bus stop, but she receives two points for being older than me. However I did move my bag of the seat for her. We are now tied. I hope she wins another point soon, I am beginning to feel awkward. Wait, she is closer to the bus, she wins the game. This is good, I am now relieved. She will get onto the bus first.

We both move closer to the edge of the curb and the woman holds out her arm, signalling the bus to stop. If we were playing the game still, she would also receive another point. She steps onto the bus and sits on the front seat near the window. I board the bus and take a seat further back. We are both on the bus now and we are on our way.

Some say that strangers are friends we have yet to meet. I think to myself, that she could have been a friend that I should have met. But I will have another time, another place and another incident to see a stranger and to meet a friend.
