A top ballet dancer in their class, Park Jimin and ace of the football team, the hot star Jeon Jungkook are known to be the power couple of Seoul University. They were simply known as JiKook. This power couple are top of their classes and that made everyone envy this pair but for some reason they were the model for others, too. Being a top student at your class while also being the ace in your field is so hard, people wonder how they managed to do.

At school, they were inseparable, although they are in different sections and different fields, they always find time to be together during their breaks and no one could ever steal the one from the other. However, that’s the only time they could be together. Though living in the same neighbourhood, Jimin and Jungkook go home in separate ways.

Jimin and Jungkook’s family were not in good terms. Well, the past of their families we’re not in good terms since the land issue they had before. These two must’ve snuck out so well to get together.

Jungkook and Jimin sat side by side in the school garden bench.

“Jimina, do you remember the day I said I fell in love with you at first sight?”

“Hmm, yeah. Why?”

“Nothing. I just love reminiscing that day. When I think about it, it just makes my love for

you grow stronger.”

Jimin blushed. “Well, why did you fell in love with me that day?”

Jungkook straightened his back and faced Jimin, “Because…You were so beautiful when

you dance. When you just get lost into the music and let it get to you, you just burst out every emotion. You look like an angel dancing.”

Jimin turned even redder and smiled widely. “Am I only beautiful that day? How about

the other days? Now?”

Jungkook cupped Jimin’s chin and stared right into her eyes, “You are beautiful every day, babe. In everything you do and whatever you face looks like, beaded with sweat or you just woke up in the morning, you’re always beautiful.”

Jimin, being a very softie human being, was so flustered, lowering his head and held his hands tightly. Jungkook smiled knowing his pair was touched. He brought Jimin’s head up and planted a soft kiss on Jimin’s lips and then to her forehead, wiping her tears away.

“Thank you, Jungkook. I love you so much.”

“And I love you so much, too. More than anything in this world. Promise me, we’ll stay forever.”

“Forever, babe. Forever.”

The days went on like that. Their school days were filled with love and inspiration. Doing what they do best and excelling in what they excel. There was never a boring day at school with these two lovers. Well, only at school. When they go home, they’re like strangers to each other. Their families have forbidden them to have any connection of any sort. So, to say, their families were oblivious of their relationship and the school also doesn’t know anything about their family situations.

Every month of December, Seoul University holds an annual variety show to enterprise their students’ talents and that would include the ballet team to showcase their piece.

Jimin had planned to do a solo performance as a gift for Jungkook in their 4th anniversary. It was the same time when Jungkook fell in love with her, during the school’s variety show 4 years ago.

Jimin, as always gave her best to perform. She spends most of her breaks practicing. And Jungkook didn’t bother because he knows that during these times, Jimin practices so hard.

He visits her sometimes, though, to eat lunch and snacks with Jimin. Also, to let Jimin take a break. Knowing Jimin, she practices so hard and she could go on an entire day practicing just to make her performance perfect so it’s Jungkook’s way of reminding her to take a break and Jimin could rest. Well, sort of their time together, too.

As the variety show date was nearing, Jimin got busier and busier practicing. Jungkook barely can make Jimin take a break. He understood. He just told Jimin’s ballet mate to look after her and report to him if anything else happens.

Just right before the variety show date, Jimin was rushed to the hospital. Jimin’s ballet mate told Jungkook and he instantly flew out of class after knowing what happened. Jungkook was so worried, he couldn’t even think straight. He was running the hell out of breath.

When he arrived, he saw Jimin lying unconscious. Her parents on her side, crying. Jungkook was too worried to think about their family feud and went straight to Jimin and cried. Her parents were shocked, but they let him be.

Jungkook was sobbing and calling out to Jimin but to no avail, he just received low breaths and chest heaving slowly.

“Jimin, babe. Please wake up. What happened? I told you not to practice so hard, but you didn’t listen to me. You must’ve been so tired.”

“She has a weak heart. She has a hole in her heart.” Jimin’s mother interrupted.

“How long did she have this?” Jungkook was shocked but still in tears.

“Since she was born.”

Jungkook could not speak. He didn’t know this about Jimin. All along her thought Jimin was a healthy person because of her personality.

Jimin had not told Jungkook about her condition because she doesn’t want Jungkook to worry and she just wants to be with Jungkook as long she could, as long as she’s breathing.

She knew this day would come, when her heart would surrender but she wished for a little longer. She wanted to give Jungkook her last and most beautiful performance, so she practiced hard, too hard, she forgot her complications.

“Jimina, why didn’t you tell me? Why? I could’ve given you everything. Take you out wherever you want, let you do what you want. Why does it have to be this way?”

Her heart was still beating as it displays on the screen but Jungkook felt like she was slowly fading away.

“Jungkook, I knew there was something going on between you and Jimin even though you were both forbidden.”

“Mrs. Park, I’m – “

“No, Jungkook. You don’t need to be sorry. In fact, we must thank you for giving our daughter a second chance in life. When we knew about her condition, the doctor said she wouldn’t make it until she was 12. We were so worried about her that’s why we forbid her to anything. Her doing ballet was against our will but she said she loved to dance and we gave her that. Not knowing that helped her get through her complication. We were relieved when she passed the deadline. I knew you were friends even before you got together and just let that be as long as it doesn’t harm her. Until she went to college, she grew even into a more beautiful lady, and became more passionate about ballet. I knew then, there was something between you and Jimin. Her college days were so happy, and we thought that having you around her was good. Towards her, we act like we hate you but knowing Jimin, the more we restrict her, the more she does it and, so we did that just, so she will continue to be with you. I knew she loved you. So much to make it obvious. You helped her Jungkook. You lifted her up to a new level. You gave a life we can never give her. If you didn’t come along, we wouldn’t know the chances of her living. Thank you, Jungkook. Thank you so much.”

“Thank you, too, Mrs. Park for doing that for Jimin. But what I worry now is her current state.”

“Yeah, well the doctor said, she was just too stressed. I hope that there will be no more complica –“

The conversation was cut with a loud beep in the machine, showing a flat line. Jungkook hurried to call a doctor while the Park’s were left with Jimin in the room. Jungkook ran and shouted for help. Hearing his loud yells, the nurses and the doctor ran down the aisle towards Jimin’s room. They checked her pulse and without a sound, they proceeded immediately to the voltage pumps. The doctor charged the highest joules, but no sign of life was seen in Jimin’s body.

“No! Doctor, please save her! Save her. Please, I beg of you.” Jungkook pleaded.

“We’re doing our best, sir.”

The doctor and nurses continued to charge and pumping out of Jimin’s chest hoping , too that this girl can be saved.

Jimin’s parents were holding each other’s hands tightly and her mother was already in tears, praying that this won’t be the last moment of her only daughter. But the doctor stopped pumping, looking at his watch,

“December 17, 2013, 5:45 pm, died of heart complication.”

Jungkook grabbed the doctor, “No! Please tell me she’s not dead! Tell me you’re lying, doctor!”

“I’m really sorry, sir. We did our best, but she’s already gone.” Heads down, the doctor went straight.

“No!” Jungkook screamed as he knelt and tears continued to stream down his face.

The doctor looked back, “But it was great that you helped her reach this far. You must’ve been someone very important to her,” and finally went out of the room.

Jungkook was muted by the moment. Tears were still flowing. Reminiscing each single moment with Jimin. Her smile, her laugh, her lips, her hugs, everything about Jimin. They swore to be together forever, to grow and die together. And he sure will fulfill that promise.

Jungkook stood and held Jimin’s face once more, whispering, “I love you for a thousand years Jimin. I’ll be with you. I promise.” He closed his eyes, letting the tears drop, and kissed Jimin’s forehead. “I’ll see you really soon, babe. I swear, I will.” Jungkook stood and went out of the hospital, leaving Jimin’s family behind.

There was just one thing in his mind, their promise to each other. Jungkook sped his motor on the way home and rushed to his room. Getting his tripod and camera, the one he used to take pictures and small clips of their moments together. He set the camera to video mode and placed it in front of his bed. Jungkook sat, facing the camera and adjusting the angles to fit him.

“Hello Mom, Dad. First of all, I want to say sorry for disobeying you. I’m sorry for what I’m about to do. I know I was forbidden to have any connections with the Park family, but I did. You know Jimin? Their only daughter? We were friends. No, I mean, we’re in a relationship. I know you will be mad at me for doing this, but I love her so much. My life was changed since I knew. We have been in touch since high school and I’m sorry for not telling you about it. I promised to be with her until death and now that she’s gone, it feels like my life has no sense in it. I don’t want to accept the fact the she’s gone but she is, now. Just a while ago, I was with her in the hospital. Her parents told me she had a heart complication since she was born. I saw her die in front of my eyes.  My heart shattered into a million pieces. I can’t live my life without Jimin. I know I’m still young and I can find another girl to love but I swore Jimin my life and I can’t imagine having another woman to love than her. Her parents said she could’ve died earlier but they said I gave her life. I gave Jimin a chance to continue living and made her reach this far. Knowing that, I was happy wanted to be with her even more. As much as I wanted to stay but I’m sorry. Really, really sorry. I love you both so much. Please don’t blame the Park’s for this. I’m was happy and I am happy now that I’ll get to be with Jimin. Don’t be sad. Live and go on with your lives. You have given me so much love and I didn’t regret every single moment living. Please do it for me. I love you. Bye Mom, Dad.” And with that, he stopped the record and went on to get his swiss knife he thought would never be used.

The only thing in Jungkook’s mind was that he could finally be with Jimin. Smiling, Jungkook breathed heavily, his last breath, and forced the silver metal into his pulse. Blood gushed staining his bed sheets and the floor carpet, leaving a lifeless Jungkook on the bed.

Love has its way of surprise. It comes in mysterious ways. As much as we knew the frail chances of success, we want it again. It makes us crazy even if we know it could brake us.

Love is sharing your soul with another, showing your vulnerability to someone who could possibly do whatever they want with it. Love is taking risk, throwing our heart in the dark blindly, hoping it will land in the right spot with fingers tightly crossed. There is never a certainty that the partner our heart has chosen is the right one to suffice our need for attention and care.

However, love can be good. Even in the darkest of times, love can show us a little hope. A little light in the everlasting darkness our hearts may portray. When two hearts connect, no matter what they have been through, they can bloom the dead bud in their hearts into a beautiful rose. Yet every rose has its thorn. It is for us to make the choice of accepting this flower, both beauty and pain. Love grows in every garden, whether it had been thought dead or ever-blooming. Love is found everywhere and in everything, surprising us when it hits unannounced.

Love is beauty, and pain. It is light and dark, fawning and blooming. It brings joy and sadness, hope and helplessness. It is a contrast and duality that we try so hard to comprehend, yet are faded with utter obliviousness when we delve deeper. When we choose to love, we choose to give ourselves and hold nothing back, which is probably the scariest thing of all.
