Once

there was this boy.

He made me happy.

And once

he told me

that he loved me.

That was a long time ago

and now

I have forgotten what love feels like.

I no longer pine

for a boy to see me

and no longer look through me

as if I'm invisible.

A simple mistake

drawing attention to me

the pretty girl who knows how to dance

to me

the hard-to-get virgin.

I gave up on love

because the boys surrounding me only wanted my body

not my heart

not the words I wanted to say and hear

not love.

They touch me

want me

when all I want to do is run away.

Escape their torments

run to safety

to love.

But

until then

I need to remember

how to love.
