What?

So many words are locked in my mind

I don't know what they mean,

but they spin in circles

swirling down into the abyss of some memory.

My intelligence must be determined;

Smart, brilliant, dumb, stupid.

Never challenged.

Health is important

only if you're ignorant.

Sit in a chair that breaks your back

to prepare to carry the burden

the last generation left us.

Numbers and names and dates and places

"Remember this white man who died thousands of years ago."

I have learned that who we are

is just what is left of us when we die.

In order to have existed,

I must leave a mark upon this world

be remembered.

But I exist now

and have not cemented my name

in the history books that students read.

Kindergarten prepares you for Elementary,

Elementary prepares you for Middle School,

Middle School prepares you for High School,

High School prepares you for College,

College prepares you for Work,

Work prepares you for... ?

A handprint in space and time,

the existence of man.

With so many prints, we don't have enough

space in our textbooks.

What we learn we read in ink,

we see the marks of many but never read them

so who are they?

Who are we?

What am I doing?
