On the Way to Margate On a Sunny Day

Westgate on Sea

Watching the waves

and sat  next to me an old man and his son

on a bench on the pier overlooking the sea

Get out much I said

Oh no said his son

Everyday when I can

But behind his head

His son said no

and smiled

as if he were an imbecile

senile and already dead

As the old man finished

his fag

on the bench

on the pier

at Westgate on Sea
