My family moved to a house last year.I didn't want to move in the first place. I liked where I was at and the situation I was in.The day I found out we were moving, I bawled my eyes out (even though we were only a two or three miles from where we were living). The house we were moving to had to be painted ,cleaned ,needed some trees outside to be chopped down ,the yard needed to be leveled and there was the actual moving part. Most normal kids don't like doing work and I am no exception. The fact that I didn't even want to move, didn't exactly increase my work output. The thing I hated most about moving was leveling the yard and pulling down trees.

My Dad said pretty early on, that the yard was going to be leveled out. A man, Jimmy at our church, so graciously offered to come and help us with the yard using a tractor. Before I get any further, I have to say that I don't have a problem with Jimmy. He is a nice guy.He bought me a soda and a candy bar.

The first day that Jimmy brought the tractor over, it was just him and my Dad working in the summer heat. I felt guilty being inside the cool, air conditioned house. I wouldn't be soon. I had to bring Jimmy and my Dad some drinks while they were taking a break. While I was outside, Jimmy asked me if I was going to help him on monday. I said "sure". I had no idea what I was getting in to.On sunday, I decided I should go to bed a litttle earlier than usual because I didn't know what time Jimmy was going to arrive. I went to bed around 10.

My Mom works at night and sleeps late into the day. We usually have to drag her out of bed past noon. With this said,I was surprised to be woken up by her. I saw her. thought I had slept way too late and tried my best to act as if I had been awake for hours. She said "You know how you like to get up early? Well, it's six o'clock. Jimmy's here." I stared at her dumbly,as if I was waiting to hear the punchline. I dragged myself out of bed and ate breakfast. What was running through my mind was that Jimmy thought that was that kids today are so spoiled that they can't getup early and work. I guess I wanted to show him off, so I went outside with the biggest smile I could possibly give and said in the most non-sarcastic way I could "good morning." We worked miserably in the summer heat.We cut down trees, dug up stumps, picked up roots and Jimmy drove the tractor. We worked till Jimmy left around five o'clock.

We worked like that for a week or so, then I recieved some of the best news I ever heard. Jimmy said "I'm not going to be here next week. I am going to be taking my tractor over to this lady's house who is going to be paying me to be doing this type of work." To be perfectly honest, I didn't care about any of that. I had me a week off.Eventually, Monday rolled around and I was asexcited as if I had finally made it to heaven.Heaven is a nice place. I wish I could have been there longer. I went outside and jumped on the trampoline. While I was jumping, a gold car pulled up.I was thinking Jimmy drives a little blue truck. The car pulled into our driveway."No"The car pulled out and I began to think that it was just making a U-turn. It pulled across the street and I prayed."Please no.Please! Please ,God no! Don't let it be-" "Howdy!" I sighed "-Jimmy." I just lost my week off.

Sometime that week Jimmy taught me how to drive the tractor.I was moving it in a constant circle in the front yard. Jimmy and my Dad didn't think a circle was very exciting ,so they yelled "Do something!"I did a figure eight for a few minutes and they yelled "Do something else!" There were a few times that I just barely avoided hitting this tree in the center of the yard. Then came the time when I just barely missed the tree with the front wheel.

I am going to teach you the anatomy of a tractor.

Front wheel: small

Back wheel :big

Front wheel: small

Back wheel :big

If you just barely miss something with the front wheel, odds are that the back wheel will hit the object. At the same time Jimmy said "He aint going to make it." and my Dad said "There aint no way." I hit the tree. I would have been perfectly fine if the tractor had hit the tree and had stopped ,But no the tractor wouldn't have it.The tree caused the tractor's wheels to jack up and down while it went around the tree.I was paralyzed with fear.I had an expensive piece of machinery jacking up and down around a tree. Jimmy and my Dad yelled "Well stop!"I stopped, turned and gave them that look and asked "Am I in trouble?"They hollered "Back it up!"It hit the front wheel."Go forward!"It jacked up and downaround the tree."Stop! Turn the wheel."I turned the wheel."Other way". We eventually got it out of there.

Eventually the nightmare ended or at least the tractor portion of it.I remember seeing the tractor being loaded up on the trailer. It was as if the sun came out again. The birds sang. The couch-potatoing continued. The tractor was gone.

I earned the right to be afraid of Tractors.
