“Alex,” Jeremy called.

I turned around, as he knocked me to the floor.  “Jer, get off of me.”

“Sorry,” he said getting up, then offering his hand to me.  I grabbed it, and he pulled me up.

I breathed in deep to catch my breath.  “What did you want?”

“Do you want to go to the Christmas Ball with me?” he asked, his ears and neck turning red, but he had a hopeful expression on his face.

“I’d love to,” his face rose, “but I can’t.”  His face fell.

“Why-why not?”

“I promised Kristy that I’d go with her cousin, Karl.”

“Oh.”  He looked heartbroken, and I felt terrible.

“Next year?”

“Yeah, whatever,” he said then walked away.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The night of the Christmas Ball was here.  I was wearing a candy-cane striped dress.  I still felt horrible about turning Jeremy down, but I felt even worse when I saw my date.  He was at least six inches shorter than I was, without my heels.  He was also two years younger than me, which makes him sixteen.  I glanced around for Jeremy.  I saw him dancing with Kristy.  My mouth dropped.  I excused myself from Karl and marched over to Jeremy and Kristy.  “Excuse me,” I said cutting in.
“Isn’t that the guy’s job?” Kristy asked.
“It’s also the twenty-first century.”
“Hmph!” she said, and then she stormed away.
I put my arms around Jeremy’s neck, while we swayed to a slow song.  I put my head on his shoulder and sighed.  This felt so right.
“Alex?”
“Hmm?” I asked looking up at him.  Our eyes caught and held.
“You have the most beautiful eyes.”
“Oh…um…thanks.”
“And, Al?”
“Yeah?”
“Look up.”
I looked up.  We were standing directly under mistletoe. He leaned down and kissed me.  I heard singing in my head as the fireworks happened.  I smiled when he looked at me.  This was going to be the best Christmas ever-I could tell.
