Short book summary:
Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away.
Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.
When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves—Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.
This is truly science fiction for people who hate science fiction.
The book is gripping and entertaining, and you will get many surprises, while you are following Melanie and Wanderer. Two minds in one body.
The soul, Wanderer gets placed into Melanie Stryders brain. But Melanie isn't like the other hosts. She refuses to fade away.
After a while, Wanderer slowly begins to accept Melanie, who is still living in her head. But when Melanie dreams about her little brother, Jamie, and the love of her life, Jared, she copys her feelings to Wanderer, who gets very confused when she wakes up, crying over these humans who she dosent know. But trough Melanie, she falls in love with Jared, and needs to find him and Jamie.
After many days of searching in the dry Arizona desert, Melanie and Wanderer give up, and lay down to die. But then, Melanies uncle Jeb finds them, or her. He brings them back home, to an liyerally, underground society, where some of the last 'wild' humans are living.
There, they find Jared and Jamie. Melanie is happy, but Jared is not.
The other humans want to kill Wanderer, but Jared won't let them hurt Melanies body.
Jeb is the only friendly person at this point.
After some time, Jamie wants to speak with Wanderer. She and Melanie are happy.
After a while, Jared and some other humans are going up to the surface to get food supplies. This allowes Jeb to show Wanderer the amazing underground-tunnels, where these humans live. He gets her to work, and after a couple of days, she gets used to this life, Jeb has given her. She also grows closer to Jamie, who is very interested in her storys about the other worlds. Jamie and Jeb start calling her Wanda.
When Jared returnes, Melanie is happy. But when Jared starts to act friendly to Wanda, she gets jealous.
Meanwhile, Ian, one of Wandas new friends, starts having feelings for Wanda. This sends her into an awkward love triangle (One of Meyers specialties) between Melanies physical craving for Jared, and Wandas groving feelings for Ian.
The book is stunning, and not like anything written before. If you don't like Stephenie Meyer, you should still read this amazing book. This dosent share anything with the Twilight-saga at all.
The only negative thing about The Host is, that it is pretty heavy in the beginning. The first ten chapters are booring, and they almost arent necessary.
Other then that, the book is great! You will fall in love with at least one of the characters. They are all very interesting humans. In this book, Meyer also takes more chances, then she did in the Twilight-saga. In this book, your favorite characters gets hurt, and some of them may even die.
The book is telling you a lot about what we take for granted as humens. We don't see what we have, until we lose it.
Other book reviews on The Host:
Meyer, Stephenie. The Host.
Meyer's vampire novels have been touted in the Wall Street Journal as successors to J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. And with a fan base that has grown exponentially with each new release, they may not be far off. All of which makes the publication of Meyer's first adult novel even more noteworthy. It lives up to the hype, blending science fiction and romance in a way that has never worked so well. In this page-turner, Meyer explores what happens to relationships when two beings inhabit the same physical body. Earth has been overrun by an alien species called Souls, which invade human bodies and erase personalities. As the novel opens, Melanie Stryder, one of the few human holdouts, has been captured by the aliens and is implanted with a Soul named Wanderer, who is something of a legend among her own kind because of the many hosts and planets she has experienced. Inhabiting a human mind and body is unlike anything Wanderer has ever known, and soon she finds that Melanie isn't quite willing to give up to this invader. Overwhelmed by Melanie's memories and feelings, Wanderer finds herself driven to reconnect with Melanie's old life. As with her vampire novels, Meyer will make new fans of readers "who don't read books with aliens."—Jane Jorgenson
Publisher's Weekly: A Love Triangle Involving Two Bodies
Stephenie Meyer, author of the bestselling Twilight YA series, makes her adult debut.
In this tantalizing science fiction thriller, planet-hopping parasites are inserting their silvery centipede selves into human brains, curing cancer, eliminating war and turning Earth into paradise. But some people want Earth back, warts and all, especially Melanie Stryder, who refuses to surrender, even after being captured in Chicago and becoming a host for a "soul" called Wanderer. The straightforward narrative... shines with romantic intrigue.
The Host is defenetely worth reading. I think that everyone can read this book.
