Peering through the cracks

A field of red sky and black dirt

Dead trees and golden gravestones

Terrible whispers around my head

Telling me all these things

Secrets of what I should fear

High atop a mountain

Where I can look below and I see

A crowd of unpredictability

But the stone walls are crumbling around me

The floor is caving beneath me and I’m

Surrounded by nothing but I’m trapped

Inside my head where my fear is scorching

My hiding places are disappearing

No shadows to shield me

When the sun can reach me

Rising on the black horizon

Shying away from this illumination

Searching for those receding shadows

Of protection to keep me away from

Your stern gaze of high expectation

These winters are cursing

Crashing atop this mountain

Moving away to those upstairs rooms

Taking my belongings in a plastic bag

To where the snow is deep around my feet

I’m just an “act” of what I could be

Could I be an act of what I am?

An illusion cast in front of the crowd

Marionette dolls dancing in a shroud

Messages passed between a stone

An unchanging thing that is incapable

Of understanding or consideration

Every different thought cast, obliteration

Every different life style, immediate annihilation

Shying away from this illumination

Searching for those receding shadows

Of protection to keep me away from

Your stern gaze of high expectation
