Casey at the Bar

No, there was no joy in Mudville,
But spirits still were rising
As the alcohol consumption
Reached a level quite surprising.
Tongues were loosened by the liquor,
Unhappy fans rehashed the game;
... But no matter how you saw it,
Mighty Casey was to blame.

When the tavern doors flew open,
All the patrons froze in fear.
They all hoped that Mighty Casey
Would stay far away from here!
They were drunk, but they weren't stupid,
For not one of them could doubt
Casey's NOT a happy camper,
And might once again 'strike out!'

Joe's Grill had the misfortune
Of becoming Casey's host;
Out of all the bars in Mudville,
It's the one he went to most.
All the patrons felt the tension
As Casey parked his car;
And every tongue fell still,
As he strode into the bar.

"The usual!", he bellowed,
And his beer came in a flash.
"Put it on my tab.", said Casey.
The barkeep spoke, "Pay cash."
"Cut me a break," begged Casey,
"I have had a lousy day!"
The barman said, "No cash, no beer."
And took Casey's brew away.

Oh, somewhere in the distance
You could hear a siren's wail;
They pulled Casey off the barkeep,
Then they tossed him into jail.
Seasons came and seasons went.
The Mudville 9 played once again;
But without the Mighty Casey,
He was serving 5 to ten!
