A short story about an adolescent named Lee, whose father owns a gigantic corporation working on nuclear energy.

SEAL OF TRUTH

It was an ordinary autumn morning in Seoul. The wind was rubbing the leaves gently and Lee just woke up. As always he dressed up and went to the kitchen to have a breakfast. Hung family had lots of maids to serve them. It’s because Hung’s were very rich. Of course because of their family business. In other words Hung Corporation. Hiro Hung, Lee’s grandfather had 5 more brothers. After the death of their father, these 5 brothers split the whole estate. All of them spent their money on gambling, women and even drugs except Hiro. He invested his share on an energy corporation. Hung Corporation. It was a small company which seeks for alternate energy resources. Of course at the beginning it was not a great success. After Hiro’s death the corporation was took over by Hiro’s only son, Kazuyuki, Lee’s father. After Hiro did the hard work and made the company ready to be global, Kazuyuki took over and achieved this goal. It did not take long for Hung Corp. to become a worldwide energy company. The company mainly invested their money on a new kind of nuclear energy which could be very harmful for the whole world at wrong hands. It seemed like Kazuyuki was pulling off  this job. He minimized the harms of nuclear energy on the nature. At least it seemed so.

Lee was eating his breakfast very calm. He was taught of the importance of having manners. Obviously it was taught to him by his father.  Lee was a slim boy with a height above the average. He had short dark hair, a narrow nose, thick eyebrows, normal-sized mouth and eyes as deep and wide as the ocean. He had a perky look. A look that tells you he is sure of himself. His eyes were distinguishing him from the rest of the people. Although he was good looking, he had no girlfriends, because according to his father it was not proper to have a girlfriend at that age. He always said “You better work for the school rather working to have a girl.” It echoed in Lee’s head whenever he liked a girl.

Lee finished his breakfast and left his house. He was a senior in a very private school. A school for very rich people and celebrities children. Lee was quite popular and respected person. He was very successful at his school as he must be. Lee’s father was obsessed with discipline. That’s why Lee needed to be careful about his grades and attitude. He did not have fun like his coevals. He studied a lot for his school as like as he studied for playing the piano. When he reached his school he was welcomed by the director in the entrance as always. He entered his class and greeted his friends in a respectful way. The lesson started and the teacher handed some hard copies to the class. Lee was surprised when he checked the date. It was 21st of September, 2023. He thought that the time had passed very fast. Lee survived through a regular school day and escorted to his car by his guards.

He had two guards. Keito and Kenji. These two guards were always working for the Hung’s. Keito was very strict about the rules and his responsibilities. Keito reminded Lee of his father. On the other hand Kenji was more relaxed and friendly and that was exactly why he liked Kenji more also that’s exactly why Lee’s father did not like Kenji very much. However Kenji was special for Lee. He was the only thing that was not obsessed with the rules and the responsibilities and Kenji knew it.  He was important to Lee.

When Lee had a problem he could not go to his father or to his mother. It’s because they did not understand how Lee saw things. Whenever Lee told them a problem he faced they told him to get over it by yourself. Actually his father was the one who says that not his mother, but since his mother had to follow Kazuyuki’s decisions, she had no choice. Lee knew it so he was not seeking help from his mother because it would put her in a difficult spot and since lately Lee’s father was having some drinking issues it would not be in the best interest of their family. They already were having fights. Lee did not understand why his father started drinking that much but he knew that if he’d ask he wouldn’t get a proper answer. Lee wanted to find out the reason behind all of this but he had no idea where he should start looking. Time was flowing and the weather was getting colder day by day. As the weather got colder, the relationship between his father and his mother got worse. They started arguing more than the usual and that was bugging Lee. Neither of them would explain the situation so he did not bother to ask them. But he was sure of something. He was going to find out.

When Lee came to his house he turned the television on to check the news as always. It was important to learn the news for him. A quote from his father echoed in his mind. “Knowledge is power. “  As he was watching the news he saw the protesters. They were protesting Hung Corporation for the damage they caused to the nature. Lee knew that they were overreacting because it was a fact that his father minimized the damage applied on the nature. But there were still a group of protesters who claimed that the information was fake and the nature was actually deeply damaged. Lee was not believing this kind of nonsense so this protester news always made him angry. He thought that they were disrespecting his grandfather’s heritage.

Days went by and Lee’s father was becoming even more alcoholic. He was not able to work properly and usually stayed at their house. And of course stress in the house grew larger. Lee still was not able to find out a clue about the reason behind all of these. That is why he decided to check his father’s office to find something at least some clues. And since his father was not going to work and would stay in his room most of the time, it would not be a problem him to enter the room. Because it was always a forbidden area in their house. Neither Lee nor can his mother could enter there. Only his father and his father’s co-workers.

It was a Saturday afternoon when Lee entered the office  while his father was sleeping in his room.  Despite knowing that he could not be caught, he still was afraid of it. When he entered he experienced a sudden chill. But he did not give up on the half way and proceeded to his father’s table. There was a pile of documents and envelopes on his table. It made sense since Kazuyuki was drinking instead of working. Lee started checking the documents and the envelopes. They were usual things. Statistics of the company, some lawsuits and some invitations. But there was an envelope that seemed different from the other envelopes. There was a big seal on the envelope and there was a writing on the envelope. It said “TOP SECRET”. This made Lee even more terrified and he wanted to flee. But he did not and he opened the envelope. There was no turning back.

The content of the envelope shocked Lee and his world. He did not feel his legs or his body.  Despite he did not experience alcohols very much, he felt drunk. He was trembling because he found out the truth. There were some statistics and some documents in the envelope. They were about the real effect of their nuclear energy stations. The effects on the soil, on the animals, on the atmosphere. All of them was there. He suddenly remembered the protesters on the television. He remembered the times when he got mad because of the protests. He understood that he was wrong. He understood that his father was like that because of the truth. He understood that this was the reason why his parents was arguing all the time. His own father, the man who taught him to be true and taught him taking responsibilities, he was lying all the time. The truth had a bitter taste. Lee was not looking for such answer but it was too late. He already got it. And that moment he understood that he could end all of this. He could give the document to the media and end all of this. But if he’d give this document to the media, it would be the end of the Hung family. Suddenly he was in a big dilemma. He was raised to be conscious and he was taught to care the environment. He thought of confronting his father but then he understood that it was nonsense to do that. While he was thinking all of this, his father entered the room. The moment his father saw Lee with the document in his hand, terrified; he understood that the truth was revealed. Lee could not speak. He tried to but he just could not. But his father did: “It’s not what you think…” Lee was certain that it was what he thinks. But the problem is, what was going to happen now. His father spoke again: “Lee give me the documents.”  Lee still was not able to speak and he was just standing behind the table with the document in his hand. His father repeated, shouting: “Lee give me the documents!” Lee replied: “No… I can not believe that you could do such thing! Everything you told me, everything you taught me was a deceit. I respected you, I wanted to be successful like you. But know, never… I would never want to be like you! I’m going to reveal this information to the media and to end all of this malicious falsehood!” and he ran out of the room not letting his father to grab him.

He was running like he never did while he was holding the document very tightly. Kenji was waiting outside the house when Lee galloped by him. Kenji started running after Lee despite he did not know what was going on. Lee did not quit running and he ran for miles, but he did not know that Kenji was chasing him from a distance. Lee stopped near a market to take a breather. In that moment Kenji grabbed Lee from his arm and asked him why he was running in an aggressive way. Lee explained Kenji the situation. Lee asked for his help to deliver that information to the media. Kenji told him that he would like to but he asked him that whether he was sure about this or not. Lee was certain about this and wanted to heal things his father damaged. It was the right thing to do. He gave the documents to Kenji. The first time in his life he felt that he could fully trust someone, Kenji. Lee walked back to his house. There were police cars in front of the house. Lee did not understand what was going on. As he entered the house, he also entered the bleak mood in the house. His mother hugged Lee as she saw him. She was crying. Lee still did not understand what was going on until he went to his father’s office. His father was hanging from the ceiling with a rope on his neck, motionless.
