Secret Smiles

Finn Montgomery © 2008

He sensed someone’s eyes on the back of his neck.  Turning around he recognised an old face, secrets smiles across the room ensued.  Eyes pretending in vain to not recognise each other’s contact.  A smile slowly crept upon her face, a smile that made her eyes twinkle as she raised the glass up to her mouth.  He remembered it as one of the many things about her he often thought of when he felt alone.  With a flicker of her hair, flicking her new cut fringe out of her eyes, she turned back to her boyfriend and continued to dance with him.  The boy across the room stared in dismay and took another swig of his bottle.  Just another broken-hearted loser.

The music pounded loudly in his ears, feeling sick, dizzy and hurt all over again, he needed to breathe.  Needing the cold air on his face, he wanted to escape.  Looking desperately around for a distraction, none were to be found.  He rushed up the stairs towards the rooftop.  Pushing open the escape hatch, he gulped down the fresh air as it hit his face.  The beads of sweat that had begun forming on his face quickly froze and evaporated.  Looking around, a tattered and torn cigarette box lay on the table.  His heart felt a connection to it.  He had sworn he would never smoke again, but just this once he needed to…

Stepping into the middle of the rooftop he gasped and filled his lungs with fresh air.  A sudden banging brought him back to his senses.  Twirling around, he spied a shadow in the doorway.

-“Hey you” a familiar voice spoke out.

He had a flashback to the previous fall; he was alone in his room when his door opened and a mysterious figure had spoken those words in that sultry tone.  Remembering how that night had ended, he felt himself blush as he muttered back his response.

-“Haven’t seen you in a while, you been hiding form me by any chance” she joked.  Taking a drag of his cigarette, he tried to think of a reply, but before he could, she rushed over and began kissing him passionately.

Her taste hadn’t changed in the slightest, he thought of the many nights of when he had longed for a moment like this.  Somehow though, he felt this wasn’t right.  It wasn’t the way he thought he would feel.  The lust.  The longing.  The passion had all gone.  He didn’t really want this, and would only be lying to himself if he said he did. Pulling away he looked deeply into her eyes.

-“You hurt me… and I can’t let you again”

He walked over to the door, and opening it, let himself back into the club.  The music filled his ears again.  Blocking out the rain with her pleas, carried away with the howling wind.  Leaving the night’s events out in the cold and darkness of the roof top garden, he slowly descended the stairs.  She could break someone else’s heart tonight because he wasn’t going to let her break his again.
