As the first needles of light pierced the morning sky, Felix Lucius stepped out his master’s grand door and stepped forward to freedom. It was ironic that he became free at the first morning light because his name meant lucky light. The gravel crunched under his feet as he cautiously sneaked forward. It seemed his master was completely oblivious to the fact that Felix was escaping and that a stash of golden denarii were missing from the stash he kept under the great marble statue of Zeus. Suddenly the clapping of hooves echoed through the warm dusty street. Felix decided to make a run for it; he can't be caught now. At once he dashed through the narrow streets of ancient Rome. As Felix had gone to the Forum before, with his master, he knew the way. From a house Felix could hear the clanking of metal as the blacksmith started his day's work. From another house Felix could hear the crackling of the hearth as the baker got the fire ready for the baking of bread.

"Focus," Felix thought as he was overwhelmed by the feeling of freedom, "I have to get to the Forum". The city was starting to wake up as people were coming out of their houses after a light breakfast to get to work. As usual the women of the house were heading to the Forum to get the food they needed for the day. Most Romans had a light breakfast and lunch and gorged on meat and wines in the night. Now the chatter of people was heard as Felix walked cautiously closer to the Forum when someone jumped at him. For a moment he was surprised, then utter dread filled him. He had been found! Then through bitter tears he saw

he was not looking at the raging face of his master but a nervous looking boy in dirty brown clothes.

"mon pater est iratus. tu mo auxilla? (My father is angry, can you help me?)" the boy sobbed.

"non. ego Forum ambubiat (No. I am going to the Forum)" said Felix solemnly.

The boy suddenly ran off crying. Felix carried on walking down the wide main road. Finally he got to the Forum. It was an open air structure with rows of columns around the outside with a covered walkway. In the open air section were stalls selling everything an average Roman citizen would need. Felix could feel the money in the side of his tunic press against his leg. It was time to get ready for a long trip. He needed to get away so he needed supplies. As he took out the money in a ragged little pouch, a glint of light caught his eye. Felix swiveled around and to pure dread Felix saw his master incandescent with rage. Luckily he had not spotted the runaway slave. Felix feverishly pocketed the money and ran for the temple of Apollo. There were loads of entrances and exits in there. He was bound to get away but there was one problem. The only thing that stood between him and the entrance to the temple was two bulky guards. Felix's blood ran cold and he fled from the Forum. Instantly his master spotted him and ordered to guards to pursue.

"fercifer necit( kill the scoundrel)" the master roared.
