So, that’s what rain smells like. There wasn’t anything about that in the holos, pics, and vids. Sol’s old earth was beautiful might have looked like when it was still habitable. Six generations—living on the stations, mining the asteroids, getting water ice and volatiles from the gas giants, eating rations from the dispensers, all to terraform this rock—we’re almost done. I heard that most people don’t want to live on a planet. They’re frightened of all the open space; they like to just reach out a hand and touch a bulkhead. Maybe when they see the habitations, they’ll change their minds. Me, I could get used to climate, weather, temperature variations, just to be able to do this every day. Yup, Goldilocks—not too hot, not too cold—just about right.

“Technician Alexandra, the gas tester signaled it’s done. Why don’t you upload those readings, so we can see if the O2 levels are steady?”

“Engineer Willis, do you ever just look out and really considered everything we’ve done?”

“All the time, Allie. We’ve got to get finished before nightfall. It still gets really frigid. The Atmosphere needs to thicken up a little more and the ozone layer isn’t what we’d like.”

“Teddy, it’s steady at 22 percent. So, about how long?”

“Oh, about another million tons of water and the cycle should really be self-sustaining—soon.”
