On a cold night, like tonight, I did wish.

It was a cold night, like tonight,

When I closed my eyes and wished.

Wished for love and for affection.

For it I surely was famished.

I watched the snow drift from the heavens.

Watched it kiss the ground so soft.

It did wrap with windy blanket,

Around my shoulders, bare, aloft.

And I wondered, I did wonder,

If He at all dreamt of me, too.

For I’d sell all of my possessions,

If at once I only knew.

Dreams of being held and holding,

Rocked my sleepness nights, anon.

And I’d cry into the morning,

Wide awake before the dawn.

Would the man I always dreamed of

Be the one to whisper my name?

Would he look like I imagine,

Love me though we weren’t the same?

Would he only call me Darling,

Would he kiss me ‘till we were blue?

Would he give his coat in the winter,

Be content with just us two?

Suppose I have no choice but to wait,

To see if I should find my knight.

But I’ll keep on wishing gently,

On the cold nights, like tonight.
