“What is that?”

Sa’ti is in the middle of watering Sonny when Kaj’s voice breaks him from his trance. Slightly startled, the cup of water slips in his hands and he manages to catch it before it hits the floor.

“I need to get you a bell,” He says matter-of-factly, wiping at the droplets of spilled water with his sock. “What’s what?”

“On your back,” Kaj takes a few steps closer, reaching out and gently running his fingers across the spot where Sa’ti’s new tattoo is visible next to the strap of his tank top. “A flower?”

“Oh, that. Yeah I got it done a few days ago, do you like it?” Sa’ti asks with a smile, craning his neck to try and get a better view of the little blue flower on the back of his shoulder.

“I thought you didn’t like flowers.” Is Kaj’s response, and Sa’ti can feel the younger boy’s breath against his skin. It makes him shiver. “But I do like it! Why did you get a blue one?”

“Well about three months ago you’d be right. I think a certain someone changed my mind about flowers.” Sa’ti turns around now, facing Kaj with a devious grin tugging at his lips. “But I got it to match the color of your hair. Remember that word I always call you? Ing Bitahl? It means ‘my flower’ in Aguantian.”

Sa’ti watches the blush spread from the base of Kaj’s cheeks all the way up to the tips of his ears. He would say he’s pleased by the response, but he didn’t get the tattoo just to get a reaction out of Kaj. He reaches forward and cups the boy’s cheeks in his hands, letting his thumbs gently trace over the flushed skin.

“Cheesy, right? But I think it’s quite fitting.”

Sa’ti takes a breath and leans in to press his lips against Kaj’s, eyes fluttering shut as he savors the warmth of the kiss for as long as it lasts. He pulls away after a few seconds and flashes Kaj a bright smile before gently muttering “Ing Bitahl” against his lips.

Kaj flushes even more, then, and Sa’ti’s heart flip flops when he hears the quiet but sincere words that come in response. “I love it. You. I love you.”

“Yeah, yeah. I love you, too.” He says, and for the first time in his life he actually means it
