A friend in need, an honest creed.

Poem by: Francis Berryman

Summary

how often do you hear someone say, "they're a true friend"?

and how often do you think it is true?

this poem is hopefully something that people can relate to, can understand, hopefully it will have meaning for people, and allow them to truly say, "they're a true friend".

My friends tell me,

in confidence you see,

that life has been unjust,

and now they need someone to trust.

.

.

So i give them the words they need

not what they want, nor what they plead.

they get annoyed at what i say,

and do not speak to me all day.

.

.

But in the end, when all is done,

and my words they start to think upon,

they realise then i speak the truth,

but still they need some further proof.

.

.

So do they act on my advice?

and do my words come with a price?

the answer here to both is yes,

and with the first it solves the mess.

.

.

Eventually my words shine through,

the things i say, they start to do,

the price thats paid, is paid by me,

a day or two of agony.

.

.

Tru friends they say what must be said,

while false friends lie and say instead,

what the person wants to hear,

the cost of which is far more dear.

.

.

And so i give you all this creed,

to only give them what they need,

a shoulder to cry on, here and there,

words of comfort, time, to share.

.

.

So only say what they require,

to remove them from their mire,

though they may hate you for a time,

not to do so is a crime.

.

.

So if you seek to make things better,

guard your tongue, your word, your letter,

for they may say you're not a friend,

but you'll be with them to the end.

.

.

Friendship, a blessing and a curse,

your lies will often make things worse,

but if you do what must be done,

your friends, true friendship, they have won.

.

.

And so my friend, the friend in need,

my gift to you, an honest creed,

That while the choice is up to you,

to your heart, you must be true.
