The Briar and the Rose.

There once was a gardener, who lived in a villa all alone, he had only one love in his life, his roses. He tended them every day. Watering, pruning, grafting, always hoping they would survive after he was gone, for he feared that with his passing the rose garden would be overwhelmed by the invasive briars that grew all around, clambering up the walls of his graden. Day after day he would tend his roses and cut back the briars that grew over the wall, but then at night he would go to sleep and the brambles would come back, and the roses would struggle. He feared all was lost when one day he found a new growth in his garden. At first he thought it was a rose but it grew so fast it had to be a briar. He believed his struggle was over, that the briers had won but as it grew he noticed that instead of a four petal flower this brier had a small rose. With a scent of heavenly perfume. So he stayed his hand and watched as the brier/rose grow. It spread out over the wall, it grew so quickly that it smothered the brambles and coverd the mountain in its sweet scented bloom. He no longer struggled with the uneven battle of briars and roses. He just climbed up and sat on the wall and looked outover his hill and watched nature take its course.
