This story is set in the land where the people wield elemental powers. They used to live in harmony, but jealousy grew between the peoples and the elements divided. There is no official divide, but each city has different areas, mainly occupied by an element, different classes in school for the young and recently specialised, different shops. There are spcefic trades mainly worked by an element, the metal workers are usually Fire orientated, the farmers are usually Earth. There is interaction between the peoples, but intermarrying is frowned upon, friendships between elements scorned. This story follows Freya Birchdaughter, a young girl, the daughter of a father of Fire descent and a Water bound mother and her journey to peace. When they are young, the people of Novagenera cannot perform elemental magic. When they come of age they specify, this usually happens at 15-16, the children don’t always specify the same as their parents; two Air people don’t always have an Air bound child. Freya Birchdaughter’s mother was born of two Earth parents, her father of two Air. This means that Freya contained all types of elemental magic in her blood. The kingdom of Novagenera, meaning ‘New generation’ was founded by the kings and queens of old, one of each element, as a place of peace between the elemental people. They elected that the kingdom was to be ruled by one king or queen, a spirit wielder, called an Animus, who would rule from the city of Prima. Spirit wielders were rare; these people could wield every element, including the elusive spirit. Spirit would manifest its self in whoever it thought worthy, but, once a gift had been given, it could not be taken away.

In this world there are two types of people: shiners and backgrounders. But what is really special is a backgrounder who shines…
