There was once a black lamp that was left deep inside the forest. It was believed to have an evil spirit lurking inside. When it comes out, it could do whatever it wants, but it did not have too much power. There was an old saying that if the spirit comes out and traps a young girl till she is eighteen and sacrifices her to the demon of death, then she could gain all the powers she wanted.

Centuries passed and still the spirit was trapped inside. No humans went into that forest because of the evil lamp. One day a black cat escaped its master and ran towards the jungle. Soon it came across the lamp. Thinking it was a yarn ball it started rolling it and playing with it. While doing that it suddenly rubbed the lamp and the spirit was let out.

Surprisingly the spirit in fact was a female. She was wearing a long black dress that had sleeves which looked like snakes crawling on her hands. She had dark black eyes and was glaring around her to see the person who freed her.

When she saw the cat, she took it in her hands and made a yarn ball for it out of thin air. She suddenly started talking to the cat, “No one cared about me all this time. They just left me alone in this wild forest. You finally freed me. Whenever you need me in the future just remember my name and I will be there right in front of you.”

The spirit started to leave when the cat purred. She immediately turned around and said the few words which she forgot to mention. “My name is Elvira” She then disguised herself as a commoner and left for the nearby kingdomto gain her incredible powers.

The queen of thekingdom just gave birth to a beautiful little girl. She had blond hair and brown eyes. The king and queen named her Aria. Elvira heard about the little princess and went to the castle saying that someone stole her cattle. The guards believing her let her into the main hall. The king was sitting on a big throne and the queen was right by him in a throne a bit smaller than that of the king. In between there was a jeweled cradle with the cute princess in it.

With no warning the spirit immediately turned into her true self. Everyone in the court room were startled and didn’t know what to do at the moment. Elvira used that moment and snatched the baby from the cradle and disappeared saying “ookum bookum”.

Elvira took the baby to a magical cave that only she knew about. Outside it was believed to be haunted and not even one dared to enter it. Inside the cave was a maze. If you are lost in it, then there is no way out. Elvira knew the way though. She took Aria deep inside to the center where there was a tower. The tower was over 700ft tall with a window that was all the way at the top. Except for that there was no other opening.

The evil spirit then flew in with the baby and locked her in. She took care of Aria till she was around eight and only visited her to make sure she was safe and alive for the sacrifice. Whenever Aria asked about what was beyond the darkness, Elvira would put on a grim face and say “There is nothing out there, except for darkness that will eat you if you do not know how to survive it. I will take you outside when you are eighteen and teach you the trick. Now no more questions.” Poor Aria who knew nothing always believed her and lived on.

Years passed and Aria’s life became a routine. Every morning Elvira would come and visit her for an hour or so and the rest of the day would be hers. She would read, write, paint, clean and do everything that would occupy her.

Back in the kingdom the loss of the princess was never forgotten. The king and queen were devastated and never had any more kids for the fear of losing them too. There was a boy named Karl. He was eighteen years old and heard about the story of the princess many times. When he was a kid he dreamed of rescuing her and marrying her. Now he wasn’t quite sure and mainly cared about his family.

One day he was hanging out with his friends when one started talking about meeting up that night. Everyone agreed and so when night came they all gathered near Karl’s house. They then set out towards the woods where they usually camp. Soon they started to play truth or dare. When it was Karl’s turn he picked dare and one of the boys told him to stay in the haunted cave for a whole night. He shuffled a bit but agreed to the dare. He planned to do it the next night.

The cave was not very hard to find because the trial towards it was never used. Before entering the trial Karl noticed a sign in red saying “Enter only if you know the way. If you don’t, then enter to die.” Paying no attention towards it he entered bravely. He had a bag with him in which there was a blanket, a pillow, some water, bread and an ax to protect himself. He noticed that when he went a bit more in the cave divided itself into two paths. Karl could hear faint singing from the right one so he went that way. Remembering the turns he made a map in his head while going through. As he was going deeper and deeper he became aware that he should go back but still kept going determined to find the person who sang. Once he tripped over a rock and his bag fell down. There came a splash. His bag was open and only his blanket was wet. He stood up on his legs and started to straight himself out. He looked at the bag and was about to pick it up when the strangest thing happened. His blanket which was wet was all dry. That was not all. It was moving and flying! He was about to freak out when the blanket came towards him and told him to climb on with one of its corners. Hoping that it would be safe the blanket took him on a ride. Karl kept thinking that it was the best day until reality hit him. He then directed the blanket to keep going straight and it did. And like that he went deeper and deeper until he came to the very center. It was then that he saw the tower where Aria was in. That was where the voice was coming from.

Karl went closer to see if there is a door to the tower when suddenly a thick blue liquid fell on him. Then he suddenly heard a female voice which said, “Oh no. Elvira would be mad again. This is like the 50th paint can I knocked down the window.” Karl then climbed onto his blanket and told it to go to the window still quite not sure where it was. The blanket in fact did know where it was and took him up there. When Karl peeked in, he saw a girl with blond hair that came till her waist.

Stunned he walked in and quietly said, “Who are you?”

Aria who was resumed painting and singing was startled to hear a voice which was not Elvira’s. Slowly she turned around and immediately ran to the corner of the room and covered herself with a rug. Karl slowly went closer to her and she peeked out a little.

Feeling stupid but aware that the girl is scared, Karl proceeded by saying, “It’s okay. I won’t bite you.”

Aria from the corner asked, “Who are you and how did you find this tower?”

“My name is Karl. My friends dared me to come into this haunted cave so I had to do it. Who are you?”

She suddenly came out surprised, “You mean there are more people like you out there?”

“Of course there are. Why did you ask such a stupid question?”

“I’ve never been out there. Elvira is going to take me out when I turn eighteen. And that will be in two more days. I am really excited.” By now Aria was out of the rug and was observing Karl.

“Wait a second. What name did you just mention?”

“Elvira. She told me that only people with skills can survive all the darkness out there. If I disobey her and go out, then the darkness will eat me and I’ll die.” Aria replied to him.

Karl was sure he heard the name before, but wasn’t sure when and why. Talking about names reminded him that he still doesn’t know the girl’s name. “What is your name?”

“Aria”

This name rang a bell in Karl’s head too and it was at the tip of his tongue, but still he couldn’t remember it. To know more he asked her about how long he stayed in this tower.

“My whole life, which is about 17 years,” Aria said.

“Oh my god. You are the princess! Right. Princess Aria!” he asked her excitedly.

“What on earth are you saying? I can’t be a princess. Elvira is my mom or at least she grew me up as a mother.”

It hit him. Elvira was the evil spirit that captured the princess. “Trust me,” he said to Aria, “Elvira is an evil spirit that captured you. You are the princess of our village. You have to come with me. And yes if you are wondering if I have the skill to survive the darkness, then yes I do.” Then he added when his blanket tapped on his shoulder, “Or at least my ‘magic’ blanky does.”

Aria noticing the blanket now and questioningly asked Carl, “Wow. It is wonderful. Does it actually carry people and fly.”

Karl proudly said, “Yep. Or at least I think so. This liquid fell on my blanket and it suddenly started to fly. So far it is safe. It is the one which flew me up to the window of this tower.”

“That is so cool” Aria replies.

“We should be leaving right now.” Karl reminds her about the situation they are in.

“I still don’t get it. Why would she keep me safe in this tower for all this time? What is the reason that she kidnapped me for?” she asks Karl confused.

“There is an old saying when an evil spirit captures a young girl and sacrifices her to the demon of death, she could gain power that could destroy even the whole universe,” he explains, “That is the reason I’m guessing she captured you for.”

Time was passing and it was almost the time for Elvira to come and visit Aria. Remembering this Aria immediately told Karl to leave and come back later so that she could escape when the surroundingswere clear. Karl then kissed her on the cheek and left, promising her he would come back for her. Aria blushed and just smiled. He then jumped back on his blanket and left out of the window. Wondering if the blanket knew the way to the entrance he ordered it to take him there. He went through the whole maze just like that and was out within a minute. It was already afternoon when he came out. Worried he went back to his town. His family was worried sick about his disappearance. When they saw him, his mother rushed to him and hugged him. He told them that he is all fine and needs to go to the castle.

(A bit back into the past)

Meanwhile, back in the forest the black cat had died and the lamp was just left beneath a really big tree. A boy saw it a few years back and got it and put it in his house as a token to show that he went into the dark forest. He knew that it belonged to Elvira but was just too scared to summon her. He left the lamp in his attic and forgot about it as many years passed by.

(Back to the present in the village)

When Karl told the guards at the main gate about what he discovered they immediately let him in. Karl told the king and queen about there lost daughter about how she was caught by Elvira and would be sacrificed tomorrow if they don’t do anything. He also tells them about his blanket, how it can fly and knows where and which way to go. Later he tells them that he will be leaving that night to rescue the princess from her tower. The king agrees but he wasn’t sure about how to stop Elvira from capturing other maidens in the village. When he asks Karl about this, he replies confidently, “Your highness, there in fact is a way to stop the evil spirit. We just need to find her lamp, then summon her and throw her into fire which will sacrifice it for the demon of death. But it must be done on your daughters 18th birthday, which is tomorrow.”

The king immediately gave instructions to the guards to look for the lamp and get it back safely to the kingdom. The word spread around the town faster than expected. Karl went back to his house and told his parents about what he was going to do tonight. His parents were scared to let him go again, but finally they agreed. He thanked his friends for daring him and left for the cave with his blanket.

(Back to the tower right after Karl left)

Aria was still thinking about Karl when suddenly Elvira came into the tower. “My dear, how are you?” she asks her sweetly.

“Oh I am fine, how are you Elvira?” Aria says trying to maintain a pleasant face. She was scared of her fake sweet smile knowing the reason behind it.

“I was wondering about tomorrow you know, your 18th birthday. I will take you outside and teach you the skills to survive the darkness. Aren’t you excited?” she asks her again with her evil smile on.

“Right. I totally forgot about that. Yeah I am excited.” She says not sure about how to respond.

Seeing the uneasiness in Aria’s face, Elvira asks her if something was wrong and of course she says nothing. “You sure,” Elvira asks again not convinced with her answer.

“Yes Elvira. No worries. I am all fine, its jus that I am not feeling too well,” Aria answers.

“Let me stay here for the night, that will make you feel better,” Elvira says.

“No. Come back later like you usually do. There is only one bed too. You won’t be comfortable. And I also snore like a pig (she knew it was a lie though). You won’t have a peaceful sleep,” Aria kept blabberingtill Elvira got tired of all the reasons and stopped her saying, “Alright. I don’t think you will be comfortable with me staying here. I will leave and return in a few hours to take you out. So be ready and get some sleep,” she told Aria and disappeared. Aria was shocked to see that. She always saw Elvira fly in and out but never disappear. That proved that she was a spirit who would soon sacrifice her. Scared she goes back to the window and stares outside wondering what it would be like to stay there. Imagining things she started singing.

Once Karl reached the cave he was dumbstruck. He couldn’t remember the way to the tower. His blanket knew it from only where it became magical. When he was about to give up he heard Aria’s voice and happily went that way. Once he came to the magical spot the carpet took Karl in full speed. He soon reached the tower and flew up to the window where Aria was singing.

“You ready to see the outside world,” he asks her.

“Yeah,” she replies uncertainly.

Seeing her face Karl was worried and asks her if she was okay. She replies by saying, “I am still not sure if I should do this. You told me I am the princess and my parents are waiting out for me, but what if Elvira finds me again or another girl. I don’t want them to be hurt.”

“Don’t worry the king and I have got it all under control,” Karl tells her about the plan of finding the lamp and destroying it. After hearing this Aria happily climbs onto the blanket and it starts towards the entrance. Elvira while leaving forgot her ring and goes back to the tower. When she doesn’t find Aria in the tower she gets furious and goes outside with a snap of her finger. When the blanket reaches the exit to the cave Karl helps Aria down and they start walking. When Aria saw the light outside, she was more than happy to escape the gloomy cave. That was the perfect moment for her. She had her hand in Karl’s, cool evening breeze welcoming her and everything she thought never existed. That moment soon ended.

“How dare you come outside the tower?” Elvira came shrieking from behind a tree where she was hiding.

Karl knew he was no match for her but still stood up against the evil spirit. “You will not take her away again. She is the princess, not your sacrifice.”

Elvira laughed and by just pointing towards Karl she turned Karl into a blue jay. Aria was shocked and tried running away but was easily caught. Elvira slapped her really hard and was about to disappear when Karl dived and got Elvira’s neck with his beak injuring her.

Back in the kingdom a man who was in his mid twenties came to the court telling that he might have something that might help the kingdom. When he reached the king he said, “Your highness, I have Elvira’s lamp and therefore would like to help you to save your daughter. All I need in return in some shelter for me and my family.” The king when he heard this immediately made him a part of his court and gladly took the lamp from him.

The lamp was darker and felt like ice in the king’s hand. Realizing that every second counted for his daughter life he instantly summoned Elvira who was in war with Karl.

During their fight Aria escaped and ran into the jungle. When Elvira dissolved from the fight Karl knew that the king found the lamp and summoned her. He then flew over the forest looking for Aria. The king who summoned Elvira caught her into the lamp and threw her into the sacrificial fire he made and she was destroyed for once and forever.

Karl’s blanket flew along with Karl trying to find for Aria. Days past and the king thought he was too late to save his daughter and was devastated. Aria hoped that Karl would someday find her and spent her time looking for the cave she came out of, but didn’t know how. She spent her time near a waterfall singing to the birds.

One day when Karl was once again going through the forest he heard a voice that could be none other than Aria’s. He flew in that direction and so did his carpet. He sat on a tree by the waterfall watching her sing. He was afraid that if she saw him in this form she would be really sad, but what he didn’t know was she was in love with him and didn’t care how he looked. He was about to turn back and leave but true love wouldn’t let him do that. He immediately turned back to himself when he heard Aria sing a song that was for him and only him. He was falling down when his blanket came and caught him midair. He then went to Aria who was in tears when she saw him. They hugged and left for the kingdom.

When the king and queen saw their daughter they were filled with tears. Aria was given everything she could ever wish for. Karl’s parents were really proud of him and they became very close to the royal family. Soon as days went by Karl’s friends dared him again. This time it was to ask the princess’s hand in marriage. Karl as usual was a brave man and took the dare, but when he was in front of Aria he was speechless.

“Hello your highness. How are you doing today?” were the first words he said when he saw her.

“What’s wrong with your today Karl? Why are you so formal?” she asked him innocently, but knowing the truth behind his behavior when she saw his blanket in an adoring way.

“(cough) (cough) I was um…. Wondering…. Would you like to go on a ride with me?” he asked her thinking it would be the best way to ask her.

“I would love to,” Aria said smiling.

Karl helped her onto the blanket and they flew towards the waterfall where he met her after turning back from his bird form. On the way there Karl asked her if he would like to marry her and Aria gave him a very big hug telling him that she had been waiting forever for him to ask that. And like that they flew happily ever after.

THE END
