I watch the others and their easy ways-

easy smiles, easy laughter,

a hand resting on the curve of a hip,

bodies and mouths pressed together,

standing in the middle of the bar but feeling like they’re alone in the room.

I know I’m not like them,

back flush against the corner,

body tense, stirring the ice in my drink just to occupy my hands,

trying to watch without being seen.

I know that I am a hard person to find,

and an even harder one to love.

But I just want to find someone who can love me

without needing to turn me inside out.
