When I was a child I enjoyed exploring the caves from the mountains around my home. One day, while crawling into a small chamber, my torch light was reflected by a something on the floor. It was a beautiful, transparent cube, about 6 centimeters in diameter. At a first sight it could easily be taken as a nicely cut block of glass. But a more careful look in the light reflexion would show small, regular dots, with strange, pale, diffraction patterns. I could never explain how it got there, as nobody knew about that small cave. It could be from the War period, it could be from much earlier, even from Antiquity.

I remember playing with many types of lanterns and illuminating its interior. Every time I did this, it seemed to fill with light in the same way a drop of ink fills a vessel full of water. I knew it had something special, yet I have never shown it to anyone besides my family and a few close friends. It was my little secret.

Trying to understand the phenomenon, I read many physics books. I could never understand how it worked, but those lectures increased my interest in science and I ended up teaching physics at a small university and doing research about lasers.

The years passed and I almost forgot about the cube. It was kept inside a small box, together with other memorabilia from my personal collection. And probably it would have stayed there for the rest of my life, have I not started doing some new research into solid state lasers.

*

That summer started as usually, nothing, absolutely nothing, could predict the incredible events that were going to follow. I was working on a small project to build an improved portable laser for low power devices used for research and industry. It emitted a beam that had a strange purple color. I took it to my childhood home with the plan to do some of my work in the small laboratory I had set up in the attic.

A small window proved very convenient to test the beam focusing at large distances as it was facing a large empty area with the mountains on the background. I would spend a couple of hours every night looking at the thin light thread disappearing into the mountains direction. And one evening, suddenly, I remembered about the crystal cube.

*

I am really surprised how this never crossed my mind. Having this cube in the box for such a long time and never probing its reaction to monochromatic light. But today I will find out.

The cube feels cold and hard in my hand when I take it to the attic. Takes a few minutes to fix it on a small rotating block in front of the laser. I start the purple beam in continuous regime and the light fills the crystal. This happens slowly, yet the inside brightness becomes more and more powerful. The whole attic is wrapped now in a diffuse, purple color, with small dots of higher intensity projected on the walls at regular intervals. I am rotating the cube slowly until its surface is perpendicular to the beam. The laser light crosses the crystal, becomes divergent and points to the window.

It's already dark outside. I look at the attic window and can see the beam covering it almost completely. And on the other side, a strange view can be seen. Incredulous, I come closer and find myself looking at a totally alien garden, with alleys placed in regular geometrical patterns and huge trees with white trunks and violet leaves. On the background I can see forest-covered mountains. A green sky and a few purple clouds are visible above. Far away, some unknown creatures are flying.

I spend the whole night rotating the cube on all faces, yet the same view appears on the window every time. I try to place pieces of glass in front of the beam, yet the light passes through them unhindered and nothing else happens. I try other windows from my home with exactly the same setup and no results. Only the attic window opens towards this incredible view. And when I use a lantern or a tiny laser pointer, the light beam crosses the glass boundary into the other world... At dawn, the view fades away.

My grandfather used to tell me about a house on the northern hill, not so far away from ours, built by a farmer. He bought the windows from a glass merchant who lived in our area for a short time. One day, the farmer sold his house and moved into the city. The building was demolished soon, but not before the new owner sold its doors, windows and some of the furniture. My grandfather bought a small window and used it for the attic. Everything took place a long time before I was born and nobody remembers today what happened with the glass merchant, the farmer and the other windows. Meanwhile my grandfather had passed away, as everybody else from his generation. Today, very few people even remember that a house used to be there. As for the names, they are already long forgotten...

I have analyzed the composition of the window in the lab – it showed a typical, ordinary glass. During the following years, I have tried secretly my experiment on every type of glass I could think of and with every laser wavelength. Nothing unusual ever happened. The amazing view only opened into my attic window and with the purple light beam.

Every time I come back to my childhood home, I spend long nights looking into the alien world. I send automatic light pulses with another laser, with the hope that some intelligent creatures still live there and will answer back. I never tried to take off the glass from the window – I like it more this way, it gives me the feeling that my whole home is part of that world, that I could go on the other side if I just opened it. Sometimes it's daytime, sometimes it's night on the other side. Watching the movements of the white sun on the sky, I have estimated her day length to be about 27 hours and 17 minutes. The flying creatures never came close so far, so I can't tell for sure what they are. I have taken photographs and recorded videos. Yet, for the time being I prefer to avoid telling others about my discovery. Having my window taken away by the government into a military base surrounded by armed soldiers and used for dubious purposes is not what I want. I believe mankind is not ready for it yet. The boundary of glass can only be crossed by light for the time being. Someday we might be able to use photons to teleport our bodies into a different location. And that could include passing through the stargate from my attic into the alien world. But not now, not yet.

The garden can be a remote area, maybe the builders of its stargate left the planet. I still hope to see them coming back. So, I continue to send them light signals every time I come home.

There is a stargate in my attic. I don't know where it opens, but my calculations suggest it should be less than 100 light years away. Someday its planet will be discovered by our telescopes and maybe in the distant future a probe will be sent to explore her. But for the time being I'd rather keep it as my personal secret.
