I awoke… my memory was a huge mess of screams and pain. I looked above, the ceiling had a fresco of a man being tortured by the devil. I tried to get up but couldn’t.. all the strength had gone out of my body. I tried to spread my wings, but they had been bound by chains. I closed my eyes… I had been called to the Summit of the Angels but by mischance or deviltry, I stopped to drink from a stream and then… and then all went black. I could hear buzzing. I opened my eyes… hordes of orcs were making their way towards me… food! They were ants to me.. but they were numerous.

Onward they came, and when they were within striking distance I kicked and flapped killing many. They withdrew but came back again with many more. Again I kicked and again they withdrew always coming back. Some dodging my blows and climbing my body. They bit at the flesh and I swept them away… yet more of them came. The more I kicked and swept them away, the more they came.. now armed with little sticks or spears. I felt my body being pierced from a hundred sides as I swept them away again. I fought and fought for what seemed eternity yet they never gave up. They withdrew but came back again. I attempts at fighting were growing weaker… blood was oozing out of a thousand wounds. I was going numb. I opened my eyes again… the horde was coming armed with flaming arrows and spears. Angered, I kicked and flapped with such force they many of them were killed and the rest fled. And then it all went black.

I awoke a while later… face first on the floor. A hundred things biting at me. But I noticed that I could spread my wings again… I was FREE! Upwards I went, but I had no strength and I came crashing back down as the horde sensing their prey was near death jeered and cheered. I tried fighting again but couldn’t. I closed my eyes.. my fate sealed.

Silence fell. I opened my eyes to see that the horde had withdrawn. I looked upwards… the beast was looking at me… its skin a fiery red. It had an axe in its hand. I looked into its eyes as the axe swung downwards.. towards my head… and in those eyes was pity…. The axe fell… I was free!
