Is solitude the same as loneliness?

No moon tonight.
No silver shadows stepping over wind-waved waters.
No stars, beckoning the thoughts into an immensity of infinity,
and, whilst clouds there must have been,
closetting the heavens in a cloistered cloak,
I saw them not, no defined forms of nature's nutrients
gathering to sow a harvest of hope upon a sleeping land,
or upon my weathered hand.
Yet, I knew not the blindness of my soul,
for blind it must have been.
In the long, drawn darkness of the night
I saw no flicker of a candlelight of caring.

My ears strained within this labyrinth of lightlessness,
As, in the long, still silence of the night
I waited for a whispering of belonging,
perhaps blown whimsically upon a northern wind,
that never came to shame my solitude.
In the enclosing claustrophobic coldness of the night
my flesh yearned, ached for the tender touch of caring;
Yet, all it knew was the cool fingers,
winter wanting frozenness of unloved isolation.

Just my thoughts and I,
pondering the meanings of existence,
clamouring, within this stillness,
for a reality
that seemed like smoke, blue thin-traced vapours,
hidden in the darkness of a moonless,
lightless, noiseless, heatless
hours long second of loneliness.

It all seemed like a non-existence
and made me ponder, wonder,
upon the fantasy of frail flesh,
strong hopes,
weak intentions,
supplications to a moonless night.

The unknowing;
the terrible truth of togetherness
or the fearful fantasy of singleness.
Cells screamed for unity
yet, nature has no pity
upon a moonless night.

Away, far off upon a forested hillside
a screech of life drained terror tears the morning moment;
Perhaps a fox upon a fowl,
and the pain of existing
reminds me of reality.
No moon tonight.
