Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

by Gerard Lebel

Experiencing a sharp sting,

he offered up a lifeless, muffled squeal

as the pediatric oncology nurse

jabbed the IV drip needle

into the back of his hand.

 His room at Children’s Hospital

continued displaying a few

vividly painted hanging balloons,

and multi-colored, ribbon streamers,

leftover from yesterday’s small, tenth birthday party.

Fluffy stuffed animals adorned the side bed table.

Cheerful cards decorated the white walls,

representing visions of hope and happiness...

as once again another child battled the deadly killer…

praying each night for heaven‘s gentle embrace.

Pain and hopelessness crippled his mind…

Overtaking thoughts of a miracle this time.

A nightly prayer of ‘now I lay me down to sleep…

I pray the Lord, my soul, to keep‘…

He closes his eyes drifting,

 taking his journey home.

Drifting through a kaleidoscope of revelations…

an angel’s harp…

a gentle, healing stream…

as paradise awaits.
