Table Talk

by Gerard Lebel

Sunday morning family breakfast feasts

and table talk banter back in the sixties

made for good therapy during my teen years…

Fluffy yellow scrambled eggs

surrounded by long, crisp strips

of maple cured bacon…

A stack of cinnamon raisin toast

dripping with melted creamery butter

and a platter of sliced, garden fresh tomatoes

deliciously arranged on grandmother’s heirloom

Blue Willow tableware…

An old, brown and tan crock of crackled pottery

filled with simmering Boston baked beans as

scents of molasses and salt pork permeated the air…

Freshly squeezed orange juice and ground

Arabica coffee beans brewing in our

HamiltonBeach percolator often produced

an overload to our electrical circuit

requiring a fuse box check for dad and me

with tool in hand…

Recalling the fond memories of those ‘table talk’ Sundays

many years ago, brings tears to my eyes today…

I am left this Sunday morning with but a beautiful sadness…

as only later in life have I possessed a clear understanding

of how very special those moments were to us all.

Cherish these moments as they happen…

hold on to them for dear life…

and above all else… Love one another today.
