Talking to Myself

by Gerard Lebel

I would pose myself in the plush burgundy chair,

feet dangling, not touching the floor;

My favorite of spots for the tiniest of tots,

Waiting for dad to come through the door.

I would pretend to be reading the Daily Evening News,

like nobody’s business each night;

I would talk right out loud… feeling grown up and proud,

telling tales so mom and dad wouldn’t fight.

But sometime after some time had passed,

while I was still only four and a half;

Dad began to roam… he stopped coming home,

And mom, no more, did she laugh.

I continued my pretense of reading the paper,

hoping one night, through the door dad would walk;

I learned speaking out loud… lifted the dark cloud,

As to God and myself each night I would talk.

Oh please, dear God, bring my daddy back home,

as mom would pray along with me;

Looking back on it now… it was best, somehow,

as I learned to place my trust in Thee.

Though fifty plus years have passed since then,

and mom and dad have long passed as well;

I remember those days … I have forgiven dad’s ways,

For being a man who only listened to himself.
