WHAT SHALL WE DO THEN?

by Gerard Lebel

It is November, my love, and the summer gardens have gone to sleep. The chilly, morning showers have wrought a frosty breeze with darkened, cloudy skies suspended overhead. The atmosphere is somber, cold, dark and empty. But there… just outside my patio window. What is that summer beauty I see, full of color, hope and promise?

I scamper outside and against the white backdrop of my walkway arbor is a single rose, blooming in sheer perfection. It is laced with lemon yellow, a swirl of pale apricot and a center edging of cotton candy pink. My senses are completely aroused by the rush of its intoxicating perfume as I sniff the delicate petals of this solo November rose… experiencing one last bloom as it holds on for dear life, knowing full well, winter is approaching.

This rose brings thoughts of us to mind, sweet princess. As this flower finally loses its summer beauty and the promise of hope in November… what is to become of us?

We shall not always be beautiful, my love. What shall we do then?
