This is an attempt to recapture a dream I had. Although I am in no way disabled this was the subject the dream dealt with.

There was black, slippery silk,

and a blonde coil of hair

fell smoothly to my shoulders.

There were shoes with slender heels,

sheer black stockings,

with seams dividing perfect legs

that could curve and point

wonderful shapes.

There were floating ribbons,

white and red,

and a huge round table,

pale wood, with darker lines,

surrounded by black marble.

From floor to ceiling

a column spanned the space,

coils of black iron

cased in perspex

and I was inside it,

I was gliding,

sliding my body

in a sculpture

of sinuous shapes.

Until they asked me to dance

and faces surrounded the table

as I began.

And I danced the patterns of the wood

And I danced the lightness of the air

And I danced the surging of the music

which filled me as I leapt,

hanging on the air, and falling slowly

till my heels touched the singing marble

and I arched my back like a swan.

Then a door opened

and Someone walked through the throng

and with Her came

a tide of joy so strong

that I awoke,

and turning in my bed

I saw the shadows of branches dancing

over the flowers on my wall,

and wept for happiness,

and did not remember

that I will never dance

any more.
